임진왜란 시기 西山大師 清虛堂 休靜의 義僧軍 활동과 평가 서산대사 청허당 휴정은 임진왜란 당시 의승군 활동을 이끌었던 인물이다. 그의 활동은 조선이 전쟁을 극복하는 자산이 되었고, 조선의 불교가 회생하는 계기가 되었다. 본 논문에서는 그의 의승군 활동에 대한 당대와 후대의 평가를 연구 대상으로 삼았다. 이를 위해 연대기 사료, 비문, 문집 등을 분석대상으로 삼았고, 시대와 작성 주체를 기준으로 분류하여 해당 기록이 보여주고자 한 휴정의 상에 접근하였다. 휴정은 노년의 승려였음에도 나라를 위해 몸소 나섰고, 이는 승려들의 집결을 이끌어내어 조선의 전쟁 극복에 큰 힘이 되었다. 전쟁 이후 조선은 그의 활동을 ‘忠’이라는 이념으로 기렸고 이는 문헌 뿐 아니라 대흥사의 표충사와 같은 유적으로도 확인할 수 있다. 조선은 그의 의승군 활동을 국가적으로도 사회적으로도 칭송했다. 선조와 주요 관료를 비롯하여 임진왜란 당대에 그와 함께 활동했던 이들, 그리고 그 사실을 기억하는 후대 인물들의 비문과 시문, 그리고 정조가 직접 내린 글에서 그 양상을 살필 수 있다.

Buddhist Master Seosan was the leader of the Righteous Monk-Army during the Imjin War. His activities served as an asset for Joseon to overcome war, and as an opportunity for the revival of Buddhism in Joseon. This paper studies the evaluation of his Righteous Monk-Army activities at the time and later. In this study, chronicle data, inscriptions, and literary works were analyzed. Although he was an old monk, he went to war for his country, which led to a rally of monks, giving a great boost to Joseon's victory in the war. His activities also helped the Buddhist community in Joseon. Since the war, Joseon has honored his activities with the ideology of loyalty, which can be seen not only in the literature, but also as relics such as Pyochung-sa Shrine in Daeheung-sa Temple. Joseon praised his military activities both nationally and socially. The records of King Seonjo, and the officials who worked with him during the Japanese invasion of Korea, and the epitaphs and poems of future figures who remember his activities can be found. And it is clearly confirmed in King Jeongjo's own writings.
