Barthes)의 신화론을 통해 분석하고자 하였다. 바르트의 신화론은 우리 삶 속에서 기호는 언어와 신화의 차원에서 이중의 의미 작용을 거친다고 주장한다. 기호 그 자체가 명시적으로 지시하는 명시적 의미가 있으며, 그 기호가 또 다른 기표가 되어 의미를 형성하는 함축 의미가 있다. 이러한 이중의 의미 작용 모델은 상징적 표상과 함축적 언어로 이루어진 이보나 흐미엘레프스카의 그림책을 이해하는 실마리가 될 수 있다. 이보나 흐미엘레프스카 작품 중 『마음의 집』, 『우리 딸은 어디 있을까』, 『여자아이의 왕국』을 분석하였다. 분석 결과 그의 작품에서 상징적인 글과 그림은 그자체로 조합하며 의미를 전달할 뿐만 아니라, 책 넘김이라는 작용을 통해 함축 의미를 발견할 수 있다. 또한 작품 속 글과 그림의 상징성을 파악하면서 함축 의미를 발견할 수 있다.

Symbolic meaning and multi-layered signification is features of Iwona Chmelewska's picture books. To understand her works, the readers devote themselves to active reading. Exploring the signification of her works is a way of revealing the aesthetic features of Iwona Chmelewska's picture books, and help the readers to communicate with her works. This paper tries to apply R. Barthes’ mythology to analyze the signification of her works. Barthes argued that in our lives signification happens in two levels. The sign indicates explicit meaning. And in myth level, the sign would be signifiant and indicates implicit meaning. This dual signification model can be a good frame to understand Iwona Chmelewska`s works that contain a lot of symbols and implicit languages. I analyze some of her works. I find that her works create meaning not only by using symbolic pictures and text but by using the act of turning the page, and through finding the meanings of each object on the page.
