최근 사회적경제에 대한 관심이 높아지고 있는 가운데, 지역별로 사회적경제의 활성화 정도에 있어 큰 차이를 보이고 있다. 본 연구는 이러한 차이의 원인이 지역별 사회ㆍ경제적 환경의 영향에 있을 것으로 보고, 사회적 경제 활성화 요인을 규명하고자 전국 228개 기초자치단체를 분석단위로 한 횡단면 회귀분석을 실시하였다. 그 결과 사회적경제 활성화 요인으로 소득수준, 고령화, 사회복지 시설의 밀도, 도시화, 외국인 인구비중, 고학력 인구비중, 사회단체 활동 참가율 등을 도출하였다. 아울러 사회적경제 조직의 성격에 따라 사회적경제 활성화 요인이 다르게 나타날 수 있음을 발견하였다. 일반협동조합의 경우 도시화와 고학력 인구비중이 중요한 활성화 요인으로 나타난 반면, 일반협동조합을 제외한 나머지 사회적경제 조직은 사회단체 활동 참가율과 외국인 인구비중이 중요한 활성화 요인인 것으로 나타났다.

Recently, there have been large gaps in the proliferation of social economy among the regions of Korea, while the interest of people in social economy is increasing. From a perspective of population ecology theory the researcher thought that reasons for this gap could lie in the different socioeconomic environments of the various regions. To test this hypothesis, data from 228 regions were analyzed to find factors influencing the proliferation of social economy. The results show that income and aging level, social welfare infrastructure, urbanization, proportion of the population having a bachelor’s degree or higher, social activity participation level, and ratio of the foreign population are important factors in the proliferation of social economy. In addition, the analysis found differences in factors of proliferation by types of organizations of the social economy.
