우리가 살아가는 시대는 모두가 부유함을 추구하며 살아가기를 원하기에 그 만큼 돈의 역할이 대단히 중요하다. 그러나 문제되는 것은 정치, 경제, 문화, 더 나아가 종교계에 이르기까지 돈은 그 화폐의 가치 자체로 인간의 마음과 생각을 움직이게 만들어 많은 사람들을 부패하게 만들고 더 나아가 개인뿐만 아니라 공동체를 무너뜨렸다. 현대를 살아가는 우리는 한 사람을 평가하는데 있어 그의 성품과 존재 그 자체를 기준으로 삼지 않고 그가 소유하고 있는 부와 재물에 따라 사람을 평가한다. 존재함이 아니라 소유함을 통해 살아간다는 착각에 빠지게 된 것이다. 소유에 대한 집착은 소유하고자 하는 욕망에 빠져 본인뿐만 아니라 우리의 이웃과 공동체를 소외시켜 버렸다. 존재 자체를 위협하며 물질적 만족을 최고의 가치로 삼아가는 물질주의에 빠져 살아가는 우리에게 웨슬리는 어떤 가르침을 주고 있는가? 경제의 위기와 물질로 고통당하는 이들이 여전히 우리 사회 안에서 신음하고 있는 이때에 더 많은 것을 소유하기를 꿈꾸기보다 디아코니아를 통한 나눔을 실천하고 축복된 공동체를 꿈꾸기 위해 웨슬리가 남겨둔 신앙의 유산은 무엇이 있는지를 본 논문을 통하여 살펴보았다. 본 논문을 통해 연구자는 첫째 웨슬리의 사회성화 신학에 담겨진 디아코니아 사상은 무엇이 있는지 살펴보았다. 두번째 그의 경제윤리 특히 웨슬리의 직업 노동윤리에 나타난 디아코니아 사상을 살펴보았다. 마지막으로 웨슬리의 부의 윤리와 나눔의 윤리에 대해 살펴보면서 부의 소유와 사용에 대한 디아코니아 관점에 대해 논의 하였다.

In our present age, everyone lives in pursuit of wealth by making money. So, the influence of money is great in modern times. Money affects the areas of politics, economy, culture, and religion and even causes many problems. Money, by itself, distorts a person’s mind and thoughts, and eventually corrupts him/her and destroys a community where he/she belongs. In modern times, we evaluate a person with his wealth and riches, not with his character and being by itself. So we confuse our living not by existence, but by possession. We want to own more, and as a result, we become obsessed with possession. Our obsessions with possession result in alienation not only of ourselves, but also of our neighbor and community. What is Wesley’s teaching to us, who live in the influence of materialism by putting material satisfaction as our top priority and degrading human dignity? This paper examines Wesley’s heritage of faith for us to practice sharing by Diakonia and make a healthy community, at this time when there are many suffering from economic crisis and materialism in our society. This paper first examines the meaning of Diakonia in Wesley’s theology of Social Sanctification. Second, This paper looks at the meaning of Diakonia in Wesley’s economic ethics, especially works ethics and vocation ethics. Finally, This paper discusses the view of Diakonia in the possession and use of wealth with Wesley’s teaching on wealth and giving.
