본 연구는 데이터 시대가 도래하면서 저널리즘 영역에 어떠한 변화가 발생했으며, 그 과정에서 새롭게 나타난 문제점 및 한계를 진단하고, 실천적 대안을 제시하는 데 목적을 둔다. 특히, 방대한 양의 데이터를 활용하여 기사를 작성하는 데이터 저널리즘의 쟁점을 고찰한 뒤, 저널리즘 현장에서 나타나는 문제점과 한계점을 진단하였다. 이를 위해, 현직 언론인을 대상으로 심층인터뷰를 진행하였다. 인터뷰 결과를 토대로, 데이터에 대한 검증 자체의 어려움이 데이터 저널리즘 현장에서 겪는 가장 큰 어려움임을 확인할 수 있었다. 또한, 현직 언론인들의 데이터에 대한 전반적인 이해 부족, 매일 일정 분량의 기사를 작성해야 하는 언론사의 구조적·문화적 한계, 기사 작성을 위해 활용 가능한 깊이 있는 데이터의 부족 등도 주요 어려움으로 지적되었다. 나아가, 본 연구는 데이터 저널리즘을 둘러싼 개인적·구조적 문제를 극복하기 위한 대안으로, 데이터 수집 및 가공 과정의 투명성을 위한 기계 읽기가 가능한 데이터의 제공, 데이터검증 강화를 위한 언론인 대상 데이터 리터러시 교육의 필요성, 데이터 뒤에 감춰진 맥락의 취재, 데이터 격차 해결을 위한 제도적 개선 등을 실천적 대안으로 제시하였다.

This study aims to diagnose the problems and limitations in the area of journalism with the advent of the age of data by identifying practical solutions. In particular, data journalism issues stem from the vast amount of data used in writing articles. For this study's analysis, in-depth interviews were conducted with five data journalists. Results showed how data verification is the biggest difficulty experienced in data journalism, and pointed out how journalists face issues such as insufficient understanding of the data, the structural and cultural limitations of media companies, and lack of in-depth data available for writing articles. This study presents the following solutions to overcome individual and structural problems in data journalism: providing machine-readable data for transparency in data collection, training in data literacy to enhance data verification, including the contextual understanding of data in news coverage, and promoting institution-wide improvement for resolving the data divide.
