이 연구에서는 길선주 목사가 남긴 다양한 설교집들과 책자들을 분석함으로써 그의 민족애와 현재적 함의에 대해 고찰하는 데 목적을 두었다. 이 연구를 위한 주요 자료들로서 『懈惰論』(1904), 『만사성취(萬事成就)』(1916), 『講臺寶鑑』(1926), 『吉善宙牧師說敎集』(1941), 『吉善宙牧師說敎』(1977) 등을 중심으로 살폈다. 길선주의 민족애의 관점에 나타난 의미심장한 개념들을 정리하면 다음과 같다. 첫째, 그의 민족애가 보여주는 여러 특징적 논점들로서 ‘內燃(신앙)→外延(민족애)’의 상관구도와 확산의 원리, 동족불애죄(同族不愛罪), 민족복음화와 운명공동체 의식, 내세와 순례자의 삶으로서의 현세의 연계성 등에 대해 논증했다. 둘째, 길선주의 설교집을 중심으로 ‘한민족언약사관’(韓民族言約史觀)을 다루었다. 그는 이 확고한 언약사관에 입각하여 하나님께서 반드시 압제자 일제를 물리치시고 한국을 독립시켜주실 것이라고 확신했다. 셋째, 길선주의 무죄석방에 관한 사안(法庭卑怯)은 당시 일본의 형법제도, 한국독립에 관한 그의 일관된 신념, 신앙에 기초된 민족애 등 세 가지 관점에서 분석했다.

The goal of this study is to analyze Rev. Seon-Ju Gil’s patriotism and its present implications through his various sermons and books. In order to reach this objective, I searched for his sermons and books as the valuable primary sources such as Hetaron(1904), Mansaseongchui(1916), Gangdaebogam(1926), Seon-Ju Gil’s Sermons(1941), Seon-Ju Gil’s Sermons(1977), and so on. The significant concepts of Seon-Ju Gil’s ‘the view of patriotism’ could be summarized as follows. First, I demonstrated the various distinctive thoughts of Gil’s patriotism such as the reciprocal relations of ‘internal combustion(faith)’ & ‘external extension(patriotism)’ and the principle of diffusion, the crime of not loving the Korean people, the nation’s Christianization reform and fate community consciousness, the link between the heavens and this world as a pilgrim’s life, and so forth. Second, I treated with Gil’s ‘historical view of covenant for the Korean people’ through his sermons. Based on this firm faith, he was so confident that God would defeat the oppressor Japan and make Korea independent. Third, I analyzed his acquittal(legal cowardice) from three perspectives such as Japanese criminal justice system, his consistent belief in Korean independence, his patriotism based on faith.
