용문석굴은 중국미술사에서 북위시기부터 당대까지의 석굴사원의 조영과 불상양식을 이해하는데 중요한 석굴사원이다. 또한 우리나라의 석굴사원에도 그 영향을 많이 끼쳤으며, 조성기도 남아 있어 풍부한 자료를 제공한다. 본고에서는 특히 용문석굴 가운데 가장 먼저 개착되었으며, 규모도 큰 고양동 석굴과 우리나라 석굴사원인 골굴석굴을 비교하여 살펴보았다. 용문석굴 고양동은 용문 20품 가운데 19품이 있을 정도로 서예사적으로 중요한데, 그 안에 새겨진 여러 조상기를 통해 당시 석굴개착과 불상조성, 그리고 조성 신앙에 대해서 알 수 있다. 용문석굴 고양동은 말발굽형의 기본 구조이며, 정벽에 석가삼존의 불상을 봉안하고, 양 벽면에 3층으로 나누어 많은 감실을 만들고 대규모의 불상들을 조성하였다. 불상들은 운강 석굴보다 더욱 중국화로 진전된 불상양식을 보이며, 석가상과 미륵보살상이 주로 봉안되었다. 존명의 구분뿐만 아니라 조상기에 새겨진 명문의 내용을 파악해보면 법화경 사상을 근간으로 조성되었음을 알 수 있다. 골굴석굴과 용문석굴 고양동을 비교해보면, 용문석굴 고양동은 개착시기가 골굴석굴보다 앞서지만, 신라시대부터 구법승들이 자주 방문했던 곳으로, 골굴석굴 개착에 영향을 주었던 것으로 파악된다. 기본 구조은 두 석굴 모두 말발굽형의 U자형 평면이며, 입구에 목조 건축을 하였던 공통점이 있다. 그러나 골굴석굴이 하나의 예배굴에 10개의 승방굴로 구성되어 있는 것에 비해, 용문 석굴은 예배굴과 승방굴로 구분하기 어렵다는 차이가 있다. 그러나 두 석굴의 조영사상은 법화경 사상에 기반을 두어 용문석굴 고양동이 우리나라 불상 조성에도 큰 영향을 미쳤음을 확인할 수 있다.

Longmen Caves are important cave temples in Chinese art history to understand cave temple construction and Buddha image style from the dynasty of BeiWei to the present days. They also had a great influence on Cave temples in Korea, and inscriptions of construction remain, providing abundant data. In this paper, we compared and explored Guyang Caves, the first cut among the Longmen Caves, and Golgul Caves, a Korean Cave temple. Longmen Guyang Caves have 19 out of 20 Longmen, and several inscriptions engraved therein also reveal the caves cutting, Buddha image construction, and construction faith at the time. Longmen Guyang Caves enshrines the Buddha image in the Shakyamuni Triad on the wall with the basic structure of a horseshoe, and a large number of tabernacles were created by dividing them into three floors on both walls and constructing large-scale Buddha images. Buddha images show a Buddha image style that has more evolved into Chinese painting than Yungang Caves, and the Sakyamuni image and the Maitreya image were mainly enshrined. To examine the contents of the letter markings on the construction inscriptions as well as the iconographic specification, it can be seen that it was constructed based on Lotus Sutra thought. When comparing Golgul Caves and Longmen Guyang Caves, the cutting time of Longmen Guyang Caves is ahead of that of GolgulCaves, but it was the place visited by monks studying abroad since the Shilla era, and is believed to have influenced the cutting of Golgul Caves. The basic structure of both two caves is a horseshoe-shaped U-shaped plane, and at the entrance, there is a common thing that there used to be a wooden building. However, compared to Golgul Caves consisting of 10 monks common room caves in one worshiping cave, the difference is that Longmen Caves are difficult to distinguish between worshiping caves and monks common room caves. However, the construction thought of the two Caves is based on the Lotus Sutra thought, confirming that the Longmen Guyang Caves had a great influence on the Buddha image construction in Korea.
