아쿠타가와 류노스케「희작삼매(戯作三昧)」(초출「오사카 마이니치신문」, 1921)는 「사토미 팔견전(里見八犬伝)」을 집필하는 교쿠테이 바킨의 자의식에 「희작삼매」를 집필하는 작자의 자의식이 겹쳐지는 구조로 되어 있다. 그리고 본고에서 주목하고자 하는 점은 이와 같은 중층화하는 바킨과 화자의 자의식이 어떻게 공명하고 있는가이다. 우선 바킨의 기준에 맞춰 보면 이야기는 주인공이 몇 번이나 불쾌한(불결한) 생각을 하고 그때마다 스스로 위안하려고 하는(정화하려고 하는) 패턴을 몇 번이나 반복하고 있다. 그리고 그 정화에 대한 희구는 최종적으로는 <희작삼매의 경지>에 의해 성취되어 바킨의 자의식도 소멸해 간다. 한편, 작자의 기준에 맞춰 보면 이와 같은 바킨의 자의식 운동에 동조해 가고 있으나, 일정의 거리가 있어 보인다. 「희작삼매」는 바킨의 집필 자세를 통해서 자의식의 고통으로부터 구제 가능성을 그리면서도 작자 자신의 삶이 바킨적 삶의 방식과는 일치하고 있지 않다는 점을 말하고 있는 것이 아닐까.

Ryūnosuke Akutagawa’s Gesaku Zanmai (“Absorbed in Letters,” first published by the Osaka Mainichi Shimbun in 1921) is structured such that his self-consciousness overlaps that of Takizawa Bakin, who wrote Satomi Hakkenden (“The Legend of the Eight Samurai”). This article aims to highlight the ways in which the multi-layered self-consciousness of both Bakin and the narrator resonate with the other. On the Bakin level, the tale reiterates several times a pattern in which the protagonist has repeated thoughts of discomfort (kegare; defilement) for which he tries to comfort (purify) himself. The desire for this purification is ultimately fulfilled at the point of devotion to gesaku, and Bakin’s self-consciousness disappears. Meanwhile, although there is synchronicity on the writer’s level with such movements in Bakin’s self-consciousness, ultimately, integration with Bakin is not complete at the point of devotion to gesaku, leading one to surmise a certain separation. Gesaku Zanmai depicts the possibility of salvation from the sufferings of self-consciousness through Bakin’s attitude in writing; yet, it would appear that there are components of such a Bakin-esque way of life that the writer does not match.
