아폴리네르는 1916년 단편집 『살해당한 시인』을 출간한다. 19편으로 구성된 이 단편집에는 「달의 왕」이라는 작품이 있다. 우리가 고찰해 보려는 이 작품을 읽어가다 보면 한국에 대한 짧은 묘사와 맞닥뜨리게 된다. 1쪽이 채 안 되는 분량의 한국에 대한 이 묘사는 이 작품이 한국과는 특별한 관련이 없는 만큼 우리에게 놀라움과 함께 다음과 같은 궁금증을 자아낸다. 이를테면 한국에 대한 이 묘사의 갑작스런 출현을 어떻게 바라보아야 하는가? 그 출현의 이유가 무엇인가? 그의 전위적인 문학 이론과는 어떻게 접맥될 수 있는가? 이 논문은 바로 이러한 물음들에 대한 답변의 한 시도이다. 아폴리네르는 당시 서양에 고착된 한국에 대한 상투적인 이미지들(조용한 아침의 나라, 흰옷의 민족, 은자의 왕국, 가난 등)을 대물림으로 이어받는 것이 사실이다. 그러나 그는 기존의 그 이미지들의 부정적인 의미보다는 문학적 상상력을 통해 그것들을 서로 얽어 짜서 전혀 새로운 의미를 창조해 낸다. 새로운 문학적 의미의 창출인 것이다. 따라서 그의 전위적인 문학 정신과도 상통한다. 아폴리네르는, 시인은 무한한 상상력으로 새로운 기쁨을 창출해 내야하며 새로운 진실을 추구해야 한다고 주장하기 때문이다. 아폴리네르는 끊임없이 새로움을 추구한 전위적인 작가로, 작품에 다양한 실험적 기법을 도입한다. 단절의 글쓰기(내러티브에서 서로 아무런 연속성도 연관성도 없이 각자 단절된 상태로 병치시키는 글쓰기를 말함)와 동시성의 기법(과거와 현재, 그리고 미래에 곳곳에서 일어나는 일들을 함께 동시에 포착하는 것을 말함) 역시 그의 실험적인 기법으로, 「달의 왕」 속에 묘사된 한국의 이미지들도 그와 같은 문학의 형식적인 실험, 또는 문학적 미학의 추구의 한 수단으로 이용되고 있는 측면이 크다.

Apollinaire published a collection of short stories Le Poete Assassine in 1916. The 19 short story collection has a work called “Le Roi-Lune.” And as we read this piece of work that we’re working on, we encounter descriptions of Korea. This depiction of Korea, which has less than one page, is surprising and very curious to us as the work has no special relevance to Korea. Then, how should we look at the sudden appearance of the depiction of Korea in this work? What is the reason for the appearance? How can it be linked to his avant-garde literary theory? This paper is an attempt at answering these questions. It is true that Apollinaire takes over the stereotypical images of Korea that have stuck in the West at that time: the Hermit Nation, the land of morning calm, the race of white clothes, poverty, etc. But he creates a very new meaning by intertwining them through literary imagination rather than the negative meaning of existing images; it is the creation of a new literary meaning. Therefore, it is somewhat in line with his avant-garde literary spirit. Because Apollinaire insists that the poet create new joy with infinite imagination and pursue new truths. Apollinaire is an avant-garde writer who constantly pursues novelty, introducing a variety of experimental techniques into his work. The technique of rupture and the simultaneisme are also his experimental techniques, and the images of Korea depicted in “Le Roi-Lune” are also being used as a means of such formal experiments in literature, or as a means of pursuing literary aesthetics.
