간접인용구문은 일반적으로 발화 전달의 의미를 표현하는 데 사용되지만, 발화 전달의 의미를 유지하면서 화자의 태도를 드러내는 데에도 사용될 수 있다. 해석적 언어 사용이라는 관점에서 보면 이는 각각 ‘발화 전달’의 상황에서 적절성을 획득하는 경우와 ‘반향적 발화’의 상황에서 적절성을 획득하는 경우로 볼 수 있는데, 이 논문에서는 간접인용구문의 용법을 이에 따라 구분하여 검토한다. ‘발화 전달’의 상황에서 간접인용구문은 발화 행위를 전경화하는 데에 사용될 수도 있고 발화 내용을 전경화하는 데에 사용될 수도 있는데, 발화 행위의 전경화와 관련된 용법으로는 원발화자, 원청자, 그리고 발화 여부를 확인하는 용법이 있으며, 발화 내용의 전경화와 관련된 용법으로는 제3자 발화나 청자의 이전 발화에 대한 전달 및 확인, 발화 내용 전달과 관련된 명령·요청이나 제안, 화자의 과거 발화 상기 등을 들 수 있다. ‘반향적 발화’의 상황과 관련된 용법으로는 청자의 선행 발화 내용을 확인하면서 동시에 놀람, 의심, 거부, 반발, 불만 등의 태도를 표현하는 경우와, 화자 자신의 이전 발화를 반복하여 전달하면서 청자에 대한 불만을 표현하는 경우를 들 수 있다. 간접인용구문 자체가 갖는 반향적 용법은 아니지만, 상위문 동사에 양태소가 결합하거나 상위문이 수사의문문인 경우에도 반향적 용법과 유사한 효과가 발생한다.

The purpose of this study was to examine usages of indirect quotative constructions in the aspect of interpretive use of language. Under 'reported speech' contexts that focus on speech report, quotative constructions are used to identify the original speaker or hearer and to ascertain if the reported speech is conveyed or not. They are also used in reporting and verifying the speech of hearer or the third person, in requesting or suggesting a speech report, and in reminding the speaker's former speech. 'Echoic utterance' contexts focus on the speaker's attitude towards the hearer or reported speech as well as on the speech report. 'Echoic' type of usages includes expressing speaker's complaint while repeating the speaker's former speech and expressing the speaker's attitude such as astonishment, suspicion, rejection, opposition, and complaint while verifying the hearer's former speech. When some modals are combined with a speech verb or when quotative constructions are used in rhetorical questions, quotative constructions can also be used in echoic contexts.
