2020년 창학 100주년을 맞이하는 덕성학원에는 기념일이 5월 17일, 4월 19일, 10월 10일 셋있다. 1950년 5월 17일은 덕성여자대학교에서 얼마 전까지 개교기념일로 기렸던 날이다. ‘덕성여대가 1950년 5월 17일 2년제 초급대학으로 개교하였다’는 주장에 따른 것이다. 그러나 이는 역사적 사실과 부합하지 않는다. 덕성여대는 2년제가 아니라 4년제 초급대학으로 출발하였기 때문이다. 덕성여대는 한국전쟁 중인 1952년 신학기부터 수업을 진행하기 시작하여, 1956년에 제1회 졸업생 25명을 배출하였다. 1921년 10월 10일은 현재 덕성여자중고등학교가 개교기념일로 기리는 날이다. 덕성여중고는 이 날을 근화여학교가 인가받은 날이라며 기리고 있다. 하지만 덕성의 역사에서 ‘근화’라는 이름이 처음 등장하는 것은 1923년 이후이다. 1923년 조선여자교육회 산하 부인야학강습소 이름을 근화 학원으로 처음 지었다. 사회교육기관인 근화학원이 정규 교육기관인 근화여학교로 승격한 것은 그로부터 2년 뒤인 1925년이다. 근화여학교는 이 해 8월 29일 인가받았다. 1920년 4월 19일은 2004년부터 덕성학원이 창학기념일로 기리는 날이다. 이 날은 덕성학원 설립자 차미리사가 조선여자교육회를 조직하여 부인야학을 처음 시작한 날이다. 3·1운동정신을 계승한 조선여자교육회의 창립은 19세기 말 교육구국운동의 전통을 계승하는 동시에 1920년대 민족교육운동을 선도한다는 역사적 의미를 갖는다. 2020년 창학 100주년을 맞이하여 덕성 역사의 정통성과 구성원의 정체성 확립을 위해 기념일을 하나로 통일할 필요가 있다. 그러기 위해서는 덕성학원 산하 교육기관에서 각각 기리고 있는 기념일의 역사적 의미를 재검토할 필요가 있다.

The Duksung Academy, which celebrates its 100th anniversary in 2020, has three anniversaries: May 17, April 19 and Oct. 10. First of all, May 17 is the day the university celebrated its opening day. Duksung Women's University's anniversary has been known as May 17, 1950. However, it is not true that Duksung Women’s University opened on May 17, 1950, as a two-year junior college. Second, April 19 is the day the Duksung Academy celebrates as its founding anniversary since 2004. Established on April 19, 1920 as the school's founding anniversary, it was the first time that women's night classes were started at the Joseon Women's Education Association's Women's Night School, founded by Cha Melissa, the founder of the Duksung Academy. Third, October 10 is the anniversary of the opening of Duksung Girls' Middle and High School. Duksung Girls’ High School celebrates this day as the day when Geunhwa Girls’ High School was accredited in 1921. The truth, however, is that the principal took over the school from the U.S. military authorities in 1945. Celebrated the 100th anniversary of the foundation of the Duksung Academy in 2020, the anniversary needs to be unified into one. To do so, we have to change the anniversary of the opening of Duksung Girls' High School, which has been wrongly honored so far. “The beginning of middle and high schools should be seen as April 19, 1920,” said Duksung Girls’ Middle School principal and president of the university’s general association. By honoring the founding anniversary of the school on April 19, 1920, all educational institutions under the Duksung Academy need to redefine the meaning of celebrating the centennial of the school.
