이 논문은 안회남의 「탄갱」을 중심으로 그의 징용소설을 재평가하고 징용의 의미와 그 진실성을 밝히고자 한다. 「탄갱」은 주인공과 사건이 있는 소설로 그간 안회남의 사소설적 한계를 벗어난 작품임에도 주목받지 못했다. 「탄갱」의 서사에서 주목해야 할 것은 작가가 관찰하고 기록해 온 강제징용의 진실성과 그가 해방직후 새롭게 시도한 서사적 기법이 가지는 의미다. 안회남은 갱내노동자를 중심으로 정착가족, 현원징용노동자, 지식인징용노동자 등 다양한 인물 군을 설정한다. 작가는 이들 징용노동자가 탄광에서 마주한 죽음을 처참하게 붕괴된 형체로 묘사한다. 그들이 마주한 죽음에의 공포는 자기의 부재와 세계의 불가능성을 가져오면서 그들에게 남아 있는 유일한 선택이 도주밖에 없었음을 보여준다. 도주라는 사건을 통해 징용노동자는 공동체적 의식을 회복하고 지배적 정치 질서에 저항하는 정치적 행위의 가능성을 발견한다. 「탄갱」에서 징용작가 안회남은 자신이 보고, 들은 것을 서사화함으로써 ‘자기세계’의 객관성과 사실성을 확보하는 한편, 갱내징용노동자의 심리적 변화와 행위를 통해 그간의 사소설적 방법론의 한계에서 벗어나고자 한다. 이러한 시도는 안회남 개인의 창작방법론의 변화뿐만 아니라 일제말기 징용노동자의 참혹한 세계와 그들이 걸은 힘겨운 길을 보여주고 있다는 점에서 유의미하다.

This paper aims to reassess his recruiting novel, focusing on Ahn Hoinam's Coal Mine, and to reveal the meaning and truth of the recruitment. Coal Mine did not receive attention even though it was beyond the personal novel limits of Ahn Hoi-nam. What is noteworthy in the narrative of Coal Mine is the fact that the author experienced, recorded, and observed the truth of forced recruitment and the narrative technique he attempted newly after liberation. In Coal Mine, Ahn Hoi-Nam attempted to escape from the limits of personal novels methodology by securing the objectivity and reality of his world by narrative of what he saw and heard. This attempt is meaningful in that it shows not only the changes in the methodology of Ahn Ho-nam's persona novel, but also shows the terrible world of compulsion in the late Japanese colonial period and the difficult path they took.
