유진오는 식민지부터 80년대 민주화운동에 이르는 시기 동안 소설가, 헌법학자, 교육자, 정치가 등으로 다양하게 활동한 한국의 엘리트이다. 이 논문은 유진오의 이력 가운데에서 주로 해방 이후 그의 글쓰기에 나타난 교양과 교육의 의미에 대해 탐구하고자 했다. 그의 교양교육론은 해방 이후의 한국대학의 교양교육의 형성과 발전에 상당한 영향력을 가진 것이었다. 유진오에게 이념으로서의 교양과 실천으로서의 교육 그리고 문화의 논의에서 중요한 것은 개인적·공동체적 삶의 자유로운 성장을 지속적으로 촉진하고 보증하는 문화적 정체성을 확립하는 것이었고, 무질서를 지양하는 것이었다. 이 논문은 젊음과 교육에 대한 유진오의 비전을 근대적 소명의식으로 읽고자 했다. 그에게 교양과 교육에 대한 열정과 실천은 한국적 근대성의 형성에 대한 열망이었다. 해방 이후 유진오의 글쓰기에서 일관된 것은 전쟁, 혁명, 쿠데타와 같은 비상사태 에서 근대성의 물적 기반과 문화적 정통성을 확보하려는 노력이었다. 그러나 그것은, 일제말기 유진오가 보여준 행적에서 드러났듯이, 분투와 소명, 신념윤리와 책임윤리, 사실과 규범 사이에 빚어지는 모순을 절충적으로 해소하려는 한계를 지닌 것이었다.

Yoo Jin-oh is a Korean elite who has been active as a novelist, a constitutional scholar, an educator, and a politician during the period from colonial period to the 1980s. In this paper, I tried to explore the meaning of culture(bildung) and education in Yoo Jin-oh's history of life and writing. His theory of liberal education had a considerable influence on the formation and development of Korean liberal arts education after Independence. The important thing in Yoo Jin-oh's culture as an idea, education as practice, and discussion of culture was the establishment of a cultural identity that continuously promotes and assures the free growth of personal and communal life. The passion and practice of culture and education for Yoo Jin-oh was not irrelevant to the desire for modernity in Korea. Consistent in his writing since Independence was an effort to secure the physical foundation and cultural legitimacy of Korean modernity in the exceptional state. However, it had limitations to solve the contradiction between strive(streben) and vocation(beruf), belief ethics and responsibility ethics, facts and norms as ecumenism, as implied in the act shown by Yoo Jin-oh at the end of Japanese colonial.
