As a monarchical dynasty existing from 1802 to 1945, the Nguyen Dynasty paid special attention to compiling the genealogical record. During the reign of King Gia Long, the genealogical records of the Hoang triều đại tong đồ皇朝大宗圖, Hoang gia phả hệ 皇家譜系, Hoang triều ngọc phả 皇朝玉譜were compiled. In 1820, the Imperial Clan Court was established, and the compilation of the genealogical record was assigned to the Imperial Clan Court. Therefore, compilation of genealogical record became more methodical. By the time of King Minh Menh's reign, the king entrusted to the National Academia Historica to compose the Liệt thanh thực lục 列聖實錄, entrusted to the Imperial Clan Court to compose the Hoang triều ngọc phả 皇朝玉譜, Ngọc phả 玉譜, tong phả 尊譜. By the twentieth century, a number of Nguyen's genealogical records had been translated into national language and published, such as the Tien nguyen toat yếu phả tiền bien 仙源撮要譜前編, Hoang tộc lược bien皇族略編. In 1995, The Genealogy Committee of the Nguyen family under the patronization of the Nguyen Phuc Council of Reigns published the Nguyễn Phuc tộc thế phả 阮福族世譜. This is the most complete genealogical record of the Nguyen family from the tenth century to the twentieth century, in which the final part of the Đế phả 帝譜 is written about the Nguyen kings. In this article, the author will introduce the basic features of the genealogical record of the Nguyen Dynasty, including: 1 – Compilation agency of royal genealogical records of the Nguyen Dynasty; 2 – Organizing the compilation of royal genealogical of the Nguyen Dynasty; 3 – Kinds of royal genealogical records of the Nguyen Dynasty; 4 – Publication and preservation of the royal genealogical records of the Nguyen Dynasty; 5 – Historical value of the royal genealogical records of the Nguyen Dynasty, in order to provide initial understanding of the Nguyen Dynasty’s genealogical record.
