이 글은 18세기 국문장편소설에 나타난 처처갈등담을 이야기 구조로 읽었을 때 독자의 흥미를 배가 시키는 장치들에 대해 고찰한 것이다. 작품이 생산되고 향유되었던 조선시대의 정서를 염두에 둔다면 국문장편소설에 빈번하게 나타나는 처처갈등은 혼인을 계기로 연애가 시작되는 애정 서사로 읽어낼 여지가 있다. 처처갈등을 애정 서사의 시각에서 읽어볼 때, 다음과 같이 작가가 독자의 흥미를 견인하기 위해 고안한 장치들을 확인할 수 있다. 우선, 도입부에서 대개 인물 관계를 ‘남편의 애정을 받는 부인-남편-남편의 애정을 갈구하는 부인’이라는 삼각구도로 설정하며, 남편의 애정을 동침 장면의 제시를 통해 표출하고, 이를 통해 애정을 받는 부인과 애정을 갈구하는 부인의 조건의 총합을 엇비슷하게 함으로써 서사에 팽팽한 긴장관계를 유발하는 특징이 확인된다. 이와 함께 ‘남편-남편의 애정을 받는/애정을 갈구하는 부인-부인을 욕망하는 남성’이라는 삼각구도를 중첩시키기도 하여 남편의 애정을 받는 부인의 경우에는 시련을 더욱 강화하는 장치로, 남편의 애정을 갈구하는 부인의 경우에는 음란함과 선정적인 면을 부각시키는 장치로 활용하고 있음이 확인된다. 다음으로 처처갈등의 서사 전개 과정에서 미혼단을 통해 서사에 전환점을 꾀하는 것을 확인할 수 있다. 이는 남편의 애정을 이동하게 함으로써 독자로 하여금 향후 남편의 애정의 향방에 대해 궁금증을 가지게 해준다. 마지막으로 남편의 애정을 순식간에 이동시켜 서사의 전환점으로 삼았던 미혼단의 사용이라는 위기를 해소한 후에도, 처처갈등담은 감정의 격차가 최고조로 이끌어내는 위기를 한 차례 더 설정하거나 미혼단을 사용했던 악한 부인의 처벌에 반전을 주어 독자들의 카타르시스를 극대화하는 전략을 구사하고 있음이 확인된다.

Long stories in Korean were read by many people throughout the late period of the Joseon Dynasty. It is considered that large volumes of novels were read constantly by many people because authors of long stories in Korean paid keen attention to creating stories. In this regard, this study viewed conflicts between legal wife and concubine covered most frequently in novels in Korean, from the viewpoint of narrative of romantic relationships, and investigated the strategies that authors established in order to add fun of novels. Counted as long novel works in Korean of the 18th century that became the point of argument were < Hyeonmongssangryong-gi >, < Three Generations of the Choe's Clan >, < Three Generations of the Lim's Clan > and < Myeongjugibong >. First, the introductory character is usually set up as a triangle with a husband's affectionate wife - husband - wife who craves husband's affection. The characteristic of causing a tension in the narrative is confirmed by making the sum of the conditions of the wife eager for affection for the wife. Second, it is confirmed that such novels describe conflicts between legal wife and other wife, based on a story of a fight between a good woman and a bad woman for a lover, portraying that a man's affection is going to a bad woman from a good woman by means of the pills of stupefaction, which arouses curiosity for a turn of affection that the man will show. The scene in which the man gives ordeals to the good wife makes readers feel empathy for the situation that the good wife faces and immersed in the story. Finally, even after resolving the crisis of the use of the unmarried group, which quickly moved the affection of the husband to become the turning point of the narrative, the conflict set up one more crisis or the unmarried single group. It is confirmed that he is using a strategy to maximize the catharsis of the reader by reversing the evil wife's punishment.
