『논어』에서 공자는 최초로 性개념을 제기함과 동시에 仁개념을 인간의 보편 덕으로 확고하게 정립함으로써 인본ㆍ인도ㆍ인문주의적 유교를 창도했다. 이글은 공자의 예 개념 또한 그 이전의 『시』ㆍ『서』의 용례와 비교했을 때, 인문주의적으로 새롭게 재정립되었다는 사실을 증시하는 것을 목표로 한다. 여기서는 우선 『시』와 『서』에 나타난 禮자의 용례를 전부 조사하고, 그 의미를 제시했다. 그런 다음 『시』ㆍ『서』에 나타난 예 개념의 용례를 『논어』에서 공자가 정립한 예 개념의 빈도수ㆍ주체ㆍ대상ㆍ근본ㆍ내용ㆍ형식ㆍ여타 개념(敬, 德, 仁, 恭愼勇直 등)과 비교하여 기술하고, 공자가 정립한 예 개념을 다룬 맥락과 그 특징을 살폈다. 이러한 비교와 기술을 통해 1)『시』ㆍ『서』에서 예는 대부분 제사ㆍ예제 등과 연관하여 즉자적으로 기술되었지만, 『논어』에서 공자는 반성적ㆍ비평적 토론을 통해 예 개념의 본뜻을 성찰하였으며, 2)단순히 몇 가지 개념(義, 德, 天命, 天道, 欽)과 함께 서술되던 차원을 넘어서, 다른 덕목들(仁 4회, 文 3회, 樂 7회, 君子 5회, 敬 3회 등)과 종합적인 연관 속에서 상대적으로 폭넓게 논의되었으며, 3)초월적 존재의 명령으로 그 자체로 준수되어야 할 타율적ㆍ맹목적인 계율의 차원을 넘어서, 점차 인간(군자)이 자기완성을 목적으로 자율적으로 실천하는 덕목으로서 여타 덕목들을 일관ㆍ인도ㆍ규제ㆍ문식하는 기능으로 정립되었으며, 4) 또한 예의 본말ㆍ질문ㆍ선후ㆍ변화가능성ㆍ현실성ㆍ예제의 근거(人情) 등에 대한 다양한 토의와 성찰이 나타나 있음을 확인하였다.

This papers discusses Confucius's theory of Li(禮) in Confucian analects in contrast with the Poetry and the Books of Documentary. The most critical question in the Poetry and the Books of Documentary was what is Li in a moral concepts. Li in these Classics is a central concept as a standard of a nobleman's behaviors and formal process. Confucius transformed Li as a concept of a nobleman's behaviors and formal process into Te(德) of inner Mind. Confucius said, "If a man be without the virtues proper to humanity, what has he to do with the rites of propriety? If a man be without the virtues proper to humanity, what has he to do with music?" Confucius think Humanity(仁) and Li(禮) as central moral Virtue essentially tied together. Confucius established Gentleman as new ideal of moral human beings, and Humanity and Li as central moral notions. Humanity is the fundamental-complex notion of moral Virtue, Li is a secondary notion of practice moral Virtues as a standard of Gentleman's behaviors and formal process. Confucius said, "In festive ceremonies, it is better to be sparing than extravagant. In the ceremonies of mourning, it is better that there be deep sorrow than a minute attention to observances." Li was reestablished a standard of all behaviors and formal processes as one of main moral virtue.
