Dojageon(刀子廛) was established in 1744 as a Sigeon(市廛), which dealt in encased ornamental knife, ornamental hairpin, finger ring, and expensive coral and amber goods. And it’s scale was some petty. The disputes of Nangeon(亂廛) was raised from the later 18th century, and most of them were a dispute with Sanggeon(床廛) which dealt in similar goods of those of Dojageon (刀子廛).
The Dojajang(刀子匠) attempted to establish a special guild for a independent deal, instead of join in merchant`s guild of which the Dojageonin took initiative. This dispute was an attempt for grand merchants to control Sigeon which was established by craftsmen (匠人) of Dojageon(刀子廛).
The merchants of Sigeon appealed for trading loss and bankruptcy every year , but the shop was maintained. It was a certain protection and occasionally passive support of the government that the system of Sigeon was able to maintain to the later 19th century.
The government must have protected domestic commercial rights against foreign merchants since Gaehang(開港). Thus, the government settled objectively the dispute of commercial matters to maintain the system of Sigeon.
It is a very interesting thing that Geumnangeonkeun(禁亂廛權) was restored in the later 19th century. It was prohibited nearly for a century. However, it’s rebirth was applicable only to some selected Sigeons.
In the last analysis, the government have recognized exclusive rights of some Sigeons while the system of Sigeon was slowly falling down. Especially, it was a very interesting that the Geumnangeonkeun of the petty Sigeon like Dojageon was approved to that time. The government seems to have intended to supplement finances by receiving commercial tax from merchants of Sigeon. And it seems to be a desperate countermeasure for goverment to maintain the system of Sigeon, despite of social cataclysm in the later 19th century.
