Carbon-neutral resource for producing renewable fuels has emerged recently. Among this, fast pyrolysis bio-oil is considered as highly promising and scalable method. However, it has severe drawbacks such as high acidity, instability, high water content, and low energy content. Herein, efficient upgrading of fast pyrolysis bio-oil using supercritical methanol was investigated. Varying the reaction parameters such as temperature, concentration and time, the yield of bio-oil energy efficiency were different. Based on this result, supercritical methanol upgrading process was determined to further deep investigation. Energy efficiency was determined by the amount of scMeOH consumed during the upgrading, and sophisticated fractionation of the upgraded heavy-fraction bio-oils and upgraded light-fraction bio-oils. Upgrading produced 78.4 wt% oil yield and reduced TAN to 4.0 mg-KOH/g-oil. The energy recovery and energy efficiency using different types of supercritical alcohols were presented.
