북중관계의 본질에 대한 이해는 한국이 남북관계를 개선하고 북핵문제에 대한 중국의 협력을 이끌어 내어 궁극적으로 한반도 평화를 견인해내는 데 있어 필요한 기본적 인식과 방향을 제공해 줄 수 있다. 이 글은 수교 이후 북중관계의 본질을 규명하고 북핵문제를 둘러싼 중국의 대북정책 딜레마와 주요 요인을 분석하는 데 목적이 있다. 이 글의 구성은 다음과 같다. 첫째, 수교 이후 북중관계를 평가하고, 북핵문제를 중심으로 중국의 대북정책 딜레마 사례를 제시한다. 둘째, 북중관계에 대해 상호인식, 국가이익, 국제환경 등 세 가지 요인이 미치는 영향을 분석한다. 셋째, 북중관계의 향후 전망을 제시한다. 마지막으로 정책적 시사점을 제시한다.

An understanding of the nature of North Korea-China relations can provide the fundamental perception and direction needed for South Korea to improve inter-Korean relations and lead China’s cooperation on the North Korean nuclear issue, ultimately leading to peace on the Korean peninsula. The purpose of this paper is to investigate the nature of North Korea-China relations after diplomatic relations and to analyze China’s policy dilemmas and major factors. This article is organized as follows. First, it evaluates the relationship between North Korea and China after diplomatic relations and presents examples of China’s policy dilemmas against North Korea. Second, it analyzes three factors-mutual relations, national interests, and international environment-which affect the relationship between North Korea and China. Third, it presents future prospects for North Korea-China relations. Lastly, it presents policy implications for Korea.
