이 연구의 목적은 고통스런 역사에 근거한 두 흑인들 사이의 충돌과 인종차별주의가 여전히 미국사회에 존재하는 것을 분석하고, 흑인들의 유보된 구원의 원인을 살펴보는데 있다. 어거스트 윌슨은 10년 단위로 아프리카계 미국흑인들의 역사를 그 당시 억압받았던 그들의 삶에 관해 집필함으로써 보여주고 있다. 『일곱 개의 기타』는 윌슨의 최신작품으로 1940년대 피츠버그를 배경으로 한다. 이극의 상반된 흑인 남성인물들은 백인사회로 들어가고 싶어 하는 블루스 가수인 플로이드와 백인사회를 완전히 거부하는 헤들리라는 두 사람이다. 플로이드는 자신의 인생을 살고 부자가 되고 싶어 시카고에 가려고 했으나 백인사회에서 그곳에 가는 방법이 그에게는 없었다. 헤들리는 극단적인 흑인민족주의자로서 백인사회의 규칙을 따르지 않고 저항한다. 그 결과 헤들리는 동화주의자인 플로이드를 강박관념에 사로잡혀 살해하게 된다.

The aim of this study is to analyze the conflicts between two blacks based on painful black history and there is still racial discrimination in American society. Afterwards, the cause of blacks’ salvation reserved will be discussed. August Wilson shows African American’s history in a decade by writing the life of an oppressed African Americans during that time. Seven Guitars is Wilson’s latest play and set in Pittsburgh in 1940s. Two opposing black men characters in the play are Floyed, a blues musician seeking to belong in a white society and Hedley absolutely refusing a white society. Floyd was going to Chicago to live his life and to be rich, but he had no way to go there under the white society. Hedley resists to obeying rules of a white society as an extreme black nationalist. The result of that he murders an assimilationist, Floyd with his obsessive idea.
