지금까지 김동명의 시세계가 목가풍이라는 획일적·고정화 외에 별다른 연구가 시도된 바 없다. 따라서 본 글의 목적은 김동명의 시의 본원이 ‘상실’ 극복과 ‘저항의식’에 있음을 밝히는 것이다. 김동명은 목가풍의 시세계뿐만 아니라 일제강점기의 국권상실, 이념에 의한 민족상잔에 따른 가족 및 고향 상실의 아픔을 시로 승화시켰으며, 이런 상실의 아픔 가운데에서도 일제식민지에 대한 저항의식을 작품에 드러냈다. 이 목적을 이루기 위해 상실과 저항의식이 담긴 김동명의 작품을 예시로 삼아 그 분석의 결과를 근거로 제시하는 방법을 취했다. 그 연구결과를 살펴보면 다음과 같다. 첫째, 김동명은 일제강점기에 호구지책으로 잦은 이주와 가족 상실감을 시로 치유하려 하였으며 시로 정신적 귀의처로 삼았다. 둘째, 김동명은 기본권마저 강탈당한 국권 상실의 부당함을 시로 저항했다. 셋째, 좌우의 극한 이념대립으로 이산의 아픔과 사회적 대혼란으로 말미암아 비인간적으로 자행되는 일들에 대해 비판적 시를 썼다. 이 연구를 계기로 향후 김동명 후기 시에 나타나는 참여계열의 시 연구를 진행할 예정이다.
