조명희의 초기 시들은 상실감이 수반된 울분과 슬픔을 표현하였다. 거기에 대한 이상향으로 설정된 ‘새나라’는 관념 속에 존재하는데, 이는 극복되어야 할 대상인 현실에 대한 인식이 구체성의 결여로 나타난 결과였다. 그는 이 세계를 선과 악의 두 대립항으로 설정하고, 인간이 존재하는 세상을 악으로 판단한다. 그의 현실부정의 근거는 식민지 피지배 민족의 구체적 시·공간에 있는 것이 아니라 인간혐오, 인간 세상에 대한 부정이라는 인류의 보편적·인도주의적인 것으로 나타났다. 이는 곧 그의 역사의식이나 현실의식이 투철하지 못했다는 것을 뜻한다. ‘새나라’라는 관념적 이상향은 순수의 세계로 구체화되는데, 그것은 절대악의 상대개념인 절대선의 세계로서, 때묻지 않은 원초적 순수세계이며, 아기·아침·눈 등의 이미지, 영원한 모성으로서의 어머니로 나타난다. 모성으로서의 어머니는 대지와 동일시되며, 따라서 그가 추구하는 세계는 인간이 개입되기 이전의 절대선의 순수세계로서 공간적으로 무한한 포용력의 대지, 시간적으로 아침·봄이라는 구체성을 가지며, 새 생명으로서의 아기가 존재하는 세계를 뜻한다. 그가 설정한 양 극단의 대립항 사이에 화해는 불가능하고, 대립항 사이에서 좌절과 패배를 경험할 때 중간매체인 자아가 택한 방식은 자폐와 공격이었다. 자아는 부정적 세계로부터 철저히 단절함으로써 자신을 보호하고, 다른 한편으로는 절대악의 세계를 불비·벼락으로 공격하여 기존 세계를 파괴하고 해체함으로써 새로운 순수를 꿈꾼다. 그의 시는 절대악과 절대선이라는 양 극단의 세계를 중심으로 구축되어 있었으므로 식민지의 구체적 현실을 시로 담기는 어려웠다. 살아있는 구체적 현실은 양 극단 사이의 중간매체로 존재할 것인데, 거기에는 타협이 불가능하고 어느 한 쪽의 완전한 승패만이 전제되어 있기 때문이다. 즉 두 대립항 사이에 중간적 존재인 현재적 삶은 존재하지도 않았고 존재할 수도 없었던 것이다. 그러므로 그가 리얼리즘에 입각하여 현재적 삶을 담아내기 위해서는 새로운 장르인 소설 장르가 필요하였고, 그의 돌연한 소련 망명도 이 근거에서 가능하였다. 개체적 삶보다 보편적 삶, 현실적 삶보다 관념적 이상, 민족보다 계급혁명을 우위에 두었던 그는 세계를 전면 부정하여 해체하고 새나라를 꿈꾸는 소련의 혁명에서 그가 그렇게 갈망하던 원초적 순수세계를 기대했을 것이기 때문이다.

The early poems of Jo Myung-Hee expressed feelings of losses, resentments and sorrows based on the nonconcrete idea. Therefore, the New World (SaeNaRa) that he suggested lacked real concreteness. As a result, the poetic ego selected autism and positive aggression as a self-defense mechanism. One is a method of passive self-protection and the other a positive self-protection. By the positive aggression of fire-rain and thunderbolt, the world of absolute evil would be destroyed integrally, and the New World of absolute goodness would possible. There is no truth to his poetic world, because the real life was not possible between the two concepts.
