소설에서 공간은 미학의 중요한 영역으로 상징적이고 심미적인 의미를 지니며 인간의 삶을 의미있는 것으로 끌어올리는 역할을 한다. <춘향전>은 여성이 지녀야 할 정조나 절개를 표면적으로 내세우며 공간을 통해 인간의 존엄성과 가치를 강조하고 있다. 다양한 공간 안에서 펼쳐지는 사건은 각기 다른 주제의식을 드러내기도 한다. 이를 바탕으로 이 연구에서 다룬 내용을 정리하면 다음과 같다. 첫째, <춘향전>에 나타난 공간의 양상과 활용이다. <춘향전>은 사건의 양상에 따라 다양한 공간이 나타난다. 고귀한 인물의 탄생을 알리는 희원 공간은 사건을 이끌어가기 위한 예비적 공간으로 활용되고 있으며, 결연 공간은 단오라는 민속을 통해 절개를 상징화하는 공간으로 형상화되어 사건 발단의 기능적 역할을 하고 있다. 또한 애정 공간은 두 주인공의 사랑과 이별이 한 공간에서 이루어지는 연속성을 가지며 사건 전개의 본격적인 역할로 접어드는 전환적 기능을 하고 있다. 마지막으로 시련 공간은 절개와 충절을 상징하는 공간으로 사회 비판적 성격을 가지며 기생의 절개를 충절로 상징화하는 공간으로 활용되었다. 둘째, <춘향전>의 서사적 기능을 살펴보았다. <춘향전>은 공간을 통해 천민인 기생에게 천상의 신분과 고귀함을 부여해 신분 상승의 당위성을 드러냈다. 나아가 불의한 지배층의 행태에 열(烈)이라는 윤리 도덕을 앞세워 부패한 사회에 저항하는 민중의식을 대변하였다. 셋째, 공간활용의 문학사적 의의에 대해 조망해보았다. <춘향전>은 기생을 통해 가부장제 안에서 억눌렸던 사랑이라는 감정을 과감히 드러내면서 자신의 확고한 의지를 실현해 나가는 강인한 여성상을 반영하고 있다. 그러한 가운데 사회적으로 외면당하고 관심받지 못했던 기생의 죽음을 충절로 승화시켜 인간의 진정한 자유와 가치가 무엇인지 일깨워주고 있다.

Space, a crucial part for aesthetics of a novel, has a symbolic and aesthetic meaning and plays a role in creating meaning to one’s life. < Chunhyangjeon > lifts woman’s chastity and fidelity on the surface, and emphasizes human dignity and its value through space. Also, events engaged in a variety of spaces show different theme for each event. Paragraphs below describe the researched contents based on these points. First, the aspects of space and its utilization shown in < Chunhyangjeon > was researched and discussed. < Chunhyangjeon > showed various spaces according to the shift of each event. ‘Hee-won’ was utilized as the preliminary space for preceding an event, while describing birth of a noble person. ‘Gyul-yeon’ was formed to symbolize fidelity through Korean folklore ‘Dano’, playing a functional role in opening another event. ‘Ae-jung’ has its continuity in having both love and parting of two main characters in the same space, and played a shifting role in propelling the proceeding event. ‘Shi-ryeon’ represented fidelity and loyalty with social criticism, and was utilized to symbolize fidelity of Gisaeng as loyalty. Second, the narrative function of < Chunhyangjeon > was researched and discussed. < Chunhyangjeon > through space grants high class and nobility to Gisaeng , which is subject to the lowest class, and shows legitimacy for raising one’s class. It furthermore puts morality called ‘Yeol (烈)’ ahead of unjust conducts of the ruling class, while speaking for the people’s voice standing against a corrupt society. Lastly, its significance on literary history was researched through space utilization. < Chunhyangjeon > through Gisaeng reflects a strong woman figure, boldly presenting love which had been suppressed under patriarchy, and actualizing her firm will. It sublimates the death of Gisaeng into loyalty in the meantime, which could have been socially outcast and turned away, and enlightens true freedom and value of a human.
