본 연구에서는 가정 밖 여자 청소년들을 대상으로 이들이 가정 밖에서 어떻게 생활하고 있는지를 분석함으로써 성 인지적 관점을 기반으로 한 정책적 함의를 발견하고자 하였다. 연구 방법으로는 설문조사와 면접조사를 모두 사용하는 양적/질적 연구 방법의 삼각화(triangulation)를 시도하여 연구의 심도와 일반화 가능성을 높이고자 하였다. 설문조사는 전국의 청소년쉼터, 자립지원관, 청소년회복지원시설에서 생활하는 남녀 청소년 722명을 대상으로 진행하였고, 면접조사에서는 시설에서 생활하는 만15세에서 23세의 여자 청소년 18명을 대상으로 반구조화된 질문지를 활용, 일대일 면접을 수행하였다. 연구 결과, 첫째, 여자 청소년들은 가부장적 분위기, 가정 학대, 방임으로 인한 양육 체계의 부재로 인해 가정 밖으로 나오게 되었으며, 남자 청소년에 비해 가정으로의 복귀 의사가 낮았다. 둘째, 가정 밖 여자 청소년들은 남성 청소년에 비해 자립 의사 및 자립 지원에 대한 요구가 높은 것으로 나타났다. 이는 여자 청소년들은 성적 지위로 인한 제약으로 인해 가정 밖에 있을 때 남자 청소년보다 더 취약하고 열악한 상황에 처하기 쉽기 때문인 것으로 분석되었다. 셋째, 높은 자립 의지에도 불구하고 이들은 남자 청소년에 비해 노동 시장에서 취약한 상태에 있었다. 남자 청소년에 비해 여자 청소년들은 일자리가 구하기가 훨씬 어려운 반면, 젊은 여성을 대상으로 한 불법 노동에의 유혹에 노출되는 기회가 많았다. 실제로 여자 청소년들은 불법노동에 연루되고 있는 비율이 남자 청소년에 비해 높았다. 한편, 임신과 출산 등으로 인해 자립을 위한 노동 시장에서 배제되는 일도 남자청소년에 비해 많았다. 넷째, 여자 청소년들은 남성 청소년들에 비해 심리적/정서적 불안을 느끼는 정도도 높은 것으로 나타났다. 이러한 점들을 종합해 볼 때, 가정 밖 여자 청소년들을 위한 대안적 가족 환경 마련, 심리 상담, 취업 서비스 등의 지원책이 필요함을 확인할 수 있었다. 본 연구에서는 향후 성 인지적 시각을 기반으로 한 가정 밖 청소년 지원 정책이 필요함을 강조하였다.
This study conducted the methodological triangulation using both survey and interview research methods in order to understand how runaway teenage women led a life and what difficulties they had in pursuing of self-reliance. The survey collected data from 722 runaway/homeless youths residing in youth welfare service centers. Also, 18 runaway girls (15 to 23 years of age) were interviewed with the use of open-ended questions. First, runaway girls ran away because they had been badly cared and/or abused in their families, and didn’t want to come back home as much as runaway boys did. Second, runaway teenage women had much higher level of demands/desire for self-reliance and a successful transition to adulthood. Third, in spite of their higher desire, they faced more problems to find a job and received less salary than their male counterparts. In order to make ends meet, some of them involuntarily got involved in illegal sex work. Forth, faced with the problems and difficulties, many of them became to go through extremely high level of stress and emotional instability. This study discussed the gender sensitive policy implications of helping runways teenage women to deal with the problems which they have faced in pursuing their goals of self-reliance.
