본 연구는 도선의 기호화와 이야기 전개 양상을 살펴보는 것을 목적으로 한다. 도선은 실존 인물임에도 그의 삶을 객관적으로 살펴볼 수 있는 사료가 존재하지 않는다. 도선의 삶을 구성한 사료들은 후대의 사람들이 자신들의 정치적 욕망을 실현시키기 위한 목적으로 구성된 것이 대부분 이다. 이와 함께 도선은 기층민의 문학인 구비설화에도 자주 등장한다. 기층민들은 도선의 기호가 지닌 지배집단의 의미적 한계를 탈피하여 자기의 기호로 전유하는 과정을 보였다. 도선은 구비설화를 통해서 기층민의 기호로 전환되었고, 지배층의 기호와 대립하면서 기층민의 상상적 승리를 견인하는 매개적 기호로 활용되었다. 나아가 기층민의 몽상을 수렴하여 세계를 변혁할 수 있는 기호로 자리 잡게 된다. 본 연구는 지배층이 구성하는 도선의 기호, 기층민이 전유하는 도선의 기호를 대비하여 살펴보면서, 도선설화가 지닌 의미 변화와 지향에 대해서 살펴본다.

This study examines Doseon's use of symbolization and story development. Although Doseon is a real person, there is no data by which we can objectively examine his life. The data that remains from Doseon's life consists primarily of material promulgated by later generations to realize their political desires. In addition, Doseon frequently appears in oral folktales, a literature which is part of the substratum folk culture. Substratum folk artifacts reveal a process of appropriating the symbol of Doseon into a substratum relevant symbol by breaking the dominant group's semantic limit that Doseon's symbol might originally have. The symbol of Doseon was converted to that of substratum folk through oral folktales, and was used as an intermediary symbol to lead the imaginary victory of substratum folk against a symbol of the ruling class. In addition, the substratum folk's vision converged to become a symbol that could transform the world. In order to discuss the meaning change implications that Doseon tales might have, in this study, we compare Doseon's symbolic meaning as composed by the ruling class and Doseon's symbolic meaning when exclusively controlled by substratum folk.
