이 논문은 『도시의 흉년』을 통해 박완서 소설과 한국 중산층의 관계에 대한 규명을 시도하였다. 『도시의 흉년』은 해방과 전쟁 이후 한국 사회가 맞이한 전면적인 변동 속에서 새롭게 획득한 경제적 기반을 중심으로 중산층으로의 진입을 시도하는 가정에 관한 서사이다. 이 작품에는 당대 정권에 의해 이루어지던 중산층 호명에 대한 부응과 스스로가 중산층이라는 믿음을 통한 계층 상승에의 열망이 나타난다. 1970년대 여성 권익의 증대라는 현실을 반영하듯 『도시의 흉년』에는 ‘남성답지 않은’ 남성과 ‘여성답지 않은’ 여성이 등장하고 있다. 그러나 이는 ‘남성성’으로 대변되는 중산층의 규범 및 기반에 대한 도전이라는 점에서 중산층으로의 진입이라는 열망과 충돌된다. 『도시의 흉년』은 ‘가정적 여성(domestic woman)’의 구현을 통해 이러한 불협화음을 해소하고 있다. ‘가정적 여성’은 헌신과 봉사의 미덕을 갖춘 현모양처의 모습으로 나타나고 있지만 실상 이는 여성적 영역을 확장하고 공고히 함으로써 여성의 위상을 높이고 중산층 가정을 보존하고자 하는 시도이다. 박완서의 작품은 그간 중산층에 대한 비판의 서사로 논의되어왔지만 실상 『도시의 흉년』은 중산층 형성을 지지하는 서사로 해석할 수 있다.

The purpose of this study is to investigate the relationship between a novel of Park Wan-Seo and middle class of Korea through 『Bad Year of City』. The 『Bad Year of City』 is a narration of a family who try to enter middle class with economical ground they newly acquired in full scale change that Korean society faced at after liberation and Korean war. The answer on calling as middle class which had been performed by political power of the time and desire on class ascending through belief that they themselves are middle class are appeared in this work. The ‘man who is not like man’ and the ‘woman who is not like woman’ are appeared in 『Bad Year of City』 as it reflects the reality change of female right increase that had been achieved at 1970's. But it collides with a desire of entering middle class at point of challenge on standard and base of middle class, which were represented as ‘masculinity’ The 『Bad Year of City』 solved these discord through creation of ‘domestic woman’. The domestic woman appeared as a shape of wise mother and good wife, who take devotion and service, but actually this is a try to enhance the position of female and preserve middle class family by expanding and solidifying female’s area. The works of Park Wan-Seo have been discussed in view point of criticism on middle class so far, but 『Bad Year of City』 is a narrative which helps the solidification of the making of the middle class.
