마르크스주의적 관점에서 프롤레타리아는 계급 자체를 철폐하는 계급, 즉 계급이면서 계급이 아닌 존재이다. 미래의 시간을 간직하고 있는 이 변증법적 존재의 특별한 성격은, 식민지 시기 프롤레타리아 문학운동이 형성·전개되는 과정에서 특정한 방향으로 변용된다. 제1차 세계대전과 3·1운동의 파장이 이어지는 문맥에서 프롤레타리아는 피식민지인, 가난한 자, 부랑자, 병자 등 사회-경제적·정치적으로 고통받는 모든 이들의 공통된 이름이기도 했다. 특히 ‘감각의 혁명’에서 인간 해방의 단초를 발견한 김기진에게 프롤레타리아는 매우 포괄적인 의미에서 마이너리티 또는 추방된 자들의 이름이었다. 하지만 식민지/제국 체제의 재현장치들과 관계하며 ‘프롤레타리아 문학’이 성립되기 위해서는, 식민지 자본주의 사회에서 억압받는 자로서의 프롤레타리아뿐만 아니라 그 사회의 모든 사회적 관계를 생산하는 주체로서의 프롤레타리아 ‘계급’이 명료해져야 했다. 문학에서는 ‘계급의식’, 나아가 ‘프롤레타리아 전위의 눈’을 강조하는 방식으로 나타났다. 이렇게 프롤레타리아 개념에서 노동계급의 헤게모니를 관철시키려 하면 할수록 그 개념은 점차 정체성 정치의 맥락으로 전이되어 갔다. 추방된 자들의 공통된 이름으로서의 프롤레타리아는 점차 노동계급 전위의 깃발로 변용되어 갔다고 할 수 있다.

From Marxist perspective, the proletariat is the class that abolishes itself. In other words, it is the class, and it isn’t. The characteristic of this dialectical being that preserves the future time, has been transfigured in a certain way in the development process of the proletarian literary movement in colonial Korea. Under the influence of World War Ⅰ and March 1st Movement(1919), the proletariat became the common name of all those who were suffering socio-economically and politically, that is the colonized, the poor, the tramp, the sick, etc. Especially, for Kim Ki-Jin[金基鎭], who tried to find a clue to the human liberation from the ‘revolution of the sense’, the proletariat was the name of the minority or the dispossessed in the comprehensive meaning. But, in order to bring the ‘proletarian literature’ into existence under the representational apparatus of the colonial/imperial system, it ought to have made clear that the proletarian was the ‘class’ as the subject producing all of the social relationships, not just the oppressed in the colonial capitalism. In the context of literature, it appeared in the way to emphasis on the ‘class consciousness’ and the ‘eye of the proletarian vanguard’. The more it has carried through the hegemony of labour class in the concept of the proletariat, this concept has been transferred to the context of identity politics by degrees. It could be said that the proletariat as the common name of the dispossessed has been transfigured to the flag of the vanguard of labour class.
