본고의 목적은 최신의 매체 속에서 발생하고 발전한 특수한 문학 현상인 ‘인터넷 소설’에 대한 선입견으로부터 벗어나 그 개념사와 의미를 되짚어보는 것이다. 현재 ‘인터넷 소설’에 엄밀하게 정의하고 연구하기 어려운 이유는, 그 현상에 대한 사후적인 논의만이 무성했을 뿐, 불안정하고 유동적인 개념과 그 기술적(記述的)인 담화 현상에 대해서는 큰 관심을 두지 않았기 때문이다. 한편으로 ‘키치’와 ‘오타쿠’에 근접하는 서브컬쳐로 서의 ‘인터넷 소설’에 대한 폄하가 존재하며, 다른 한편으로 우리가 새로운 시대에 기대했던 최신 매체를 통한 문학의 혁신에 미달하는 단순한 문학의 지면 확장에 그치는 ‘인터넷 연재소설’이 존재한다. 동시에 이에 대한 연구 역시 최초의 하이퍼-픽션, 팬 픽션의 상정된 논의에 그치거나 대중문화 연구 혹은 스토리텔링 연구 등의 일부 영역에서 국한되었다. 그렇기에 아즈마 히로키 등이 제시하는 포스트모던의 비(非)-서사로서의 데이터베이스나, 컴퓨터 매개 의사소통 혹은 전자 담화 등을 본격적으로 살펴보는 거시적·미시적인 연구의 병행이 이루어져야 할 것이다. 마찬가지로 아직까지는 가능성에 그치며 새로운 매체 형식의 실험적인 양상 혹은 막연한 예감만을 주고 있는 ‘트위터 소설’ 등에서 기대되는 브리콜라쥬 형식 등의 기존 문학 외부의 ‘문학성’에 대한 논의 역시 ‘인터넷 소설의 작은 역사’를 경유하며 앞으로 기대할 연구 영역으로 대두될 것이다.

This paper aims at looking at the meaning of the conceptual history of internet novel which has been come from and developed by new media and is now regarded as a special phenomenon in the world of letters. It is also believed to help divest ourselves of general preconceived notion of internet novel. It is difficult to analyze or have a strict definition of internet novel as its unstable and fluid concept and descriptive discourse have not been fully focused although there have been a lot of ex post facto discussion over the phenomenon On the one hand, internet novel, as a sub-culture such as kitsch and otaku, is often denigrated. On the other hand, an internet serial novel sometimes poorly qualifies the expected innovation of literature by newest media in a new era. In this context, internet novel is simply an extension of papers. At the same time, studies on internet novel also limit their focus on several areas such as the first hyper-fiction, fan fiction and analyses on pop culture or storytelling. Regarding these conditions, macroscopic and microscopic studies should run parallel which analyze database as postmodern non-narrative suggested by Azuma Hiroki, computer-mediated communication or electronic discourse. Discussion over literary value of new media literature such as bricolage, expected in twitter short story as an experimental case of new media, gives a vague promise but only shows the possibilities today, will also be raised as a hot topic to be studied through brief history of “Internet Novel” although they exist outside of the conventional literature now.
