In The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde(1886), Robert Louis Stevenson explores the feelings of fear and disgust aroused by the antagonist Mr. Hyde. The duality of human nature between two separate selves, Henry Jekyll and Edward Hyde, the good and the evil, intelligence and emotion, civilization and instinct, altruism and self-interest, lead the narrator, characters, and even readers to feel fear and disgust at the presence of Mr. Hyde. The fear and disgust, or terror and loathing, are not only responses to imminent danger and something sickening, but political means to strengthen the contemporary heteronomativity in the name of homopanic or homophobia in the male homosocial society. The Epistemology of the Closet(1990) by Eve Kosofsky Sedgwick analyzes the male homosocial bond in 18th and 19th century English literature, asserting male homosociality and homopanic are main power drive to reinforce the patriarchal male domination based on heteronormativity. Particularly in gothic novels and bachelor novels, romantic relations in a love triangle between two men and one woman actually excludes women as a major driver, taking male homosexulity as a significant enabler. This female-excluded male-dominating bond is named as homosociality and represses homophobia. Homophobia, however, as a disguised male homosexuality, in The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde sheds light on homosocial bonds including homosexuality among single professional bachelors like the scientific scholar Jekyll, the lawyer Utterson, the doctor Lanyon, and the gentleman Enfield, insinuating ambivalent male homoerotic desire within homophobia in the shape of fear and disgust.
