본고에서는 <최고운전>과 최치원설화를 대상으로 두 가지 점을 검토 했다. 우선, 최치원설화가 그동안은 별다른 검토 없이 지하대적퇴치설화의 한 유형으로 분류되어 왔는데, 그렇게 보기 힘들다는 점을 살펴보았다. 지하대적퇴치설화는 지하대적으로 빚어지는 혼란을 영웅이 해결하는 것으로, 어지럽혀진 사회질서를 재건하는 이야기라 할 수 있다. 하지만 최치원설화는 잡혀갔던 여성에 의해 긍정적 존재인 최치원이 출생한다는 점에서 금돼지의 긍정적 측면이 드러나고, 훼손된 질서를 재건하는 것이 아니라 지하대적의 자식이 출생함으로 인해 어지러움이 지속된다는 점에서 혼선이 생긴다. 즉 명확한 선악의 이분법이 작용하는 지하대적퇴치설화와 최치원설화는 거리가 있는 것이다. 다음으로 최치원설화는 <최고운전>의 최치원출생담과 같은 내용으로 분명한 수수관계가 성립하는데, 이 둘 중 어느 것이 먼저인가를 살펴보았다. 결과적으로 ‘소설 → 설화’의 관계가 됨을 확인하였다. 고상안의 『효빈잡기』를 통해 <최고운전>이 최치원설화보다 먼저 출현했을 가능성이 높다는 점도 그렇지만, <최고운전>의 최치원출생담에 여러 설화가 영향을 주었다는 사실, 소설에서나 가능한 ‘금돼지’, ‘녹피’, ‘문창 고을’과 같은 명시적인 것들이 설화에서도 그대로 이어진다는 점 등을 통해, 소설이 먼저 출현하고 이후 소설을 향유한 사람들에 의해 설화로 전승되었음을 알았다. <최고운전>은 다양한 설화가 조합ㆍ적용된 소설로 작가의 독창적인 창작 방법과 의도에 따라 소설적 성취가 높은 작품이라 할 수 있다. 이런 작가의 창작 의도와 창작 방법을 면밀히 검토함을 통해 앞으로 본고의 결과가 보다 더 분명해질 것이라 생각한다.

I studied on the folklore of ChoiGoWoonCheon(崔孤雲傳) and the origin of the tale of ChoiChiWon(崔致遠說話). The tale of ChoiChiWon is not the tale of slaying underground monster(地下大賊退治說話). But we have considered that one as this one. In the tale of slaying underground monster, monster took a woman as like a princess away forcibly. And then the hero came and searched monster. Finally the hero found monster and killed it. So he got her back. This tale did not leave negative things. But the tale of ChoiChiWon is not that. In the tale of ChoiChiWon, monster took a woman as like a princess away forcibly, too. And then the hero also came, searched monster, found and killed monster. The Hero got her back, too. But this tale left negative things. The women was kidnaped gave birth to a baby who is ChoiChiWon(崔致遠). He is a great man. Therefore, the tale of ChoiChiWon is not the tale of slaying underground monster(地下大賊退治說話). The birth story of ChoiChiWon(崔致遠誕生譚) in ChoiChiWon(崔致遠) that is a korean ancient novel, is similar to the tale of ChoiChiWon. So, it is true that the novel was written earlier than the tale or the novel was written later than the tale. The result of the investigation, the former is right. The novel was written earlier than the tale. The tale of ChoiChiWon was widespread by the person who read a novel text. I expect the study on the text of novel, ChoiGoWoonCheon, and then the purpose of writer and the way of creating will be cleared in the future.
