The purpose of the present study was to quantitatively determine the influences of factors related to dancesports participation and mental health under the assumption that complex and various social psychological factors operate in dancesports socialization process. The sample was collected from 588 of dancesport participaants and 511 of dancesport non-participants living in Seoul city and Kyeonggi province using a purposive sampling method from May to July, 2001. Data were collected through the questionnaire based on the previous studies using Self-determination (Pelletier, Tuson, & Haddad, 1997), Stress (Kang, Shin-Wook, 1997b), Social Support (Cohen & Hoberman, 1983), and mental health (Derogatis, Derogatis, & Rock, 1976) was measured by the scale designed from 10 specialists in dancesports, statistics, and sports sociology. The questionnaire was used after testing validity and reliability through pilot study and was performed ANCOVA and path analysis. The results were as follows: First, gender, age, and the experience of participation in dancesports were found to have significant effects on stress, but participation intensity of dancesports had negative effect on stress. Second, gender, Job, education, income and the experience of participation in dancesports were found to have significant effects on social support, but participation degree of dancesport was not found to have significant effects on social support. Third, background variables, participation degree of dancesports, stress, social support, and mental health had significant effects on mental health through direct and indirect paths.
