국가주의(Nationalism)는 세계체육사에 기준하면 18세기 이후 유럽지역에서 파생된 개념으로 자국의 독립 및 이익에 대한 국가적 저항의식으로 파악되고 있다. 이러한 의식을 우리나라 역사에 기초하여 고찰한 결과, 저변적 민중에 의해 비롯된 국가주의적 의식이 성립되어 왔음을 찾을 수 있었기에 '민족적 국가주의 체육' 이란 용어를 쓸 수 있었다. 그래서 서구의 그것과는 질적으로 차이가 있음을 알 수 있었다. 그 핵심은 우리 민족의 국가주의는 특정 국가에 대한 저항보다는 전세계적 침략과 압박에 대한 경계와 저항의식에서 비롯되었음을 역사적 사실들은 말해주고 있었다. 결국 현재 일반화되어 있는 ‘세계화’라는 개념에 이러한 정신을 실현시킬 수 있는 방안은 국제적 교류라는 편견에서 벗어나 지속적인 독자적 연구활동을 통해 운동기술, 교육, 그리고 훈련프로그램 등 체육에 관련된 최첨단 내용들을 창출해 내어 세계체육을 선두에서 이끌고 나갈 수 있어야만 진정한 의미의 세계화를 이룰 수 있다는 점을 제언하였다.
