Objective T2DM can be prevented or delayed by lifestyle intervention. An educational DVD about T2DM lifestyle prevention in the form of story, called “Love each other on the road against diabetes”, has been published. The aim of this project was to evaluate the effectiveness and feedback of this DVD among T2DM patients in Shanghai.
Methods 400 patients with T2DM were recruited. Each of them was provided a set of DVD and a questionnaire which consisted of 25 questions including three aspects (diet balance, exercise and general knowledge) of diabetes prevention. The answers and feedbacks were collected and analyzed. The proportion of the patients who mastered the knowledge of the questions only from DVD (called DVD benefit ratio, DBR) was counted.
Results 263 questionnaires were returned, 15 of them with the impression of watching DVD. 18 questions had a DBR more than 50%, of which 67.7% in diet aspect, 85.7% in exercise aspect, 70% in general aspect. DVD provided information which the patients were lack of, for instance, the DBR was 76.4% in the exercise question about using heart ratio index to assess intensity of exercise. The main points of impression included: 1) DVD helped patients rebuild the confidence against diabetes. 2) The story was close to life and easier to understand. 3) The story could give more people correct guidance to protect them from sham publicity.
Conclusion The educational DVD would be a good and popular approach for the diabetes patients to get new knowledge and guidance about lifestyle prevention of diabetes.
