Objective There is an increasing trend of obesity in young adults. Limited reports of metabolic syndrome (MetS) in young adults reported from Indonesia. In this study we report whether metabolic syndrome is also increasing in young adults
Methods Subjects were from population based study of LIFECARE, age < 39 years. We excluded those taking lipid lowering agent. Diagnosed of MetS based on AHA/NHLBI with modified waist circumference for Asian, male > 90 cm, female > 80 cm. Blood pressure and waist circumference was performed to all subjects. After 12-h fasting blood samples were taken for fasting plasma glucose, lipid profiles and was examined in the central lab.
Results During two years screening, from 2009~2011, 967 subjects < 39 years can be covered, consisted of 223 males and 744 females. Central obesity was found in 45,1% of all subjects. The prevalence of MetS was 16,9%, more females compared to males, i.e 17,2% and 15,7 % subsequently, but not significantly difference (P = 0.67).There was an increasing prevalence of MetS with increasing age, both females and males, being highest among the age group of 36-40 years, 22.1% and 23.5% for females and males.
Conclusion In this study, we found high prevalence of obesity, as well as metabolic syndrome among young adults. Lifestyle modification is urgently needed to prevent complications.
