Objective: This study investigated the efficacy of an individualized education and management system through homecare program on development of hypoglycemia event and hypoglycemia management in elderly patients with type 2 diabetes. Methods: From May 2016 to April 2017, a total of 34 patients with type 2 diabetes who were older than 60 years of age and agreed to be given homecare program on development of hypoglycemia event and hypoglycemia management (homecare program group) and patients who were given previous homecare program without diabetes education (control group) were consecutively enrolled. We compared the frequency of hypoglycemia between the two groups. Results: A total of 34 patients were enrolled and follow-up. Mean age of participants were 73.5 ± 13.6 years and mean duration of diabetes was 18.2 ± 14.2 years. There was a significant decrease in hypoglycemic event in homecare program group (p = 0.014) while control group did not showed significant decrease {p = 0.096) in this study. In addition, there were no significant differences in HbAlc, fasting plasma glucose in both groups (homecare program group; p = 0.686, p = 0.500, control group; = 0.649, 0.673). Conclusion: The individualized education and management system through homecare program on development of hypoglycemia event was effective on preventing hypoglycemic event in elderly patients with type 2 diabetes.
