For decades, the Mediterranean diet has been associated with lower risk of especially non-communicable diseases. Compliance with this dietary pattern is, however, low in non-Mediterranean countries. It is possible that other regional diets also carry health benefits, and it might be easier to comply with a familiar diet instead of adapting to a “foreign diet”. The aim of our research was to investigate the association between selected healthy Nordic foods and all-cause mortality, and risk of the following diseases: colorectal cancer, type 2 diabetes, and myocardial infarction. The research was based on the Danish Diet, Cancer and Health Cohort (Danish arm of the European Prospective Investigation into Cancer and Nutrition “EPIC” cohort). The cohort consists of 57,053 middle-aged men and women recruited between 1993 and 1997. Diet was assessed at baseline using a Food Frequency Questionnaire (FFQ). A Healthy Nordic Food Index was defined a priori as consisting of six food items of Nordic origin with expected health promoting effects including fish, cabbages, rye bread, oatmeal, apples and pears, and root vegetables. Information on vital status and disease diagnosis was obtained from national registers. Within a median follow-up time of 12 to 15 years, 4126 cohort participants died, 1025 were diagnosed with colorectal cancer, 7366 with type 2 diabetes, and 2322 with myocardial infarction. Associations were estimated using Cox Proportional Hazard models. We found that adherence to the Healthy Nordic Food Index was related to lower all-cause mortality, colorectal cancer (women only), type 2 diabetes, and myocardial infarction. All analyses were thoroughly adjusted for potential confounders. The risk estimates were in the same magnitude as previously found for The Mediterranean Diet, suggesting that healthy regional diets other than The Mediterranean Diet could be promoted to ensure health.
