The ultimate goal of diabetes education and management is to reduce the personal, social and economic burden of diabetes, to promote quality of life and to improve health outcomes. Diabetes education enables people with diabetes to manage their diabetes-related health to the best of their ability, and to allow them to make choices and take actions based on informed judgment. The diabetes education delivered by well trained health professionals becomes integrated with clinical care, forming the key to successful self-management. In order to effectively educate diabetic patients, diabetes educators must have sound diabetes knowledge and skills. While diabetes educators may come from a variety of health professions, each member of the diabetes team is expected to integrate the educator role into their professional practice.
The Korean Diabetes Assocation Committee of Education published the book for diabetes education in 2013. There is considerable knowledge placed on the pathophysiology and clinical management of diabetes in the contents of the book. However, new approaches to diabetes management and education are appearing. Therefore, we prepared a briefer book containing essential information for diabetes education to assist diabetes educators. The information contained in the curriculum can easily be adapted and used to support training of health professionals from a variety of disciplines with different levels of diabetes knowledge and skills. We hope that this will continue to serve as a step towards increasing health professionals’ knowledge and understanding, thus resulting in better care for those living with diabetes in Korea.
The purpose of this talk will be to introduce the new book and discuss some important points for making guidance for diabetes educators.
