본고에서는 퀴어문화축제의 광장행사에서의 의례와 상징에 대한 민족지적 관찰과 분석을 토대로, 퀴어문화축제의 축제성과 축제성의 정치적 효과에 대해 고찰해 보았다. 퀴어문화축제는 성소수자의 가시성과 자긍심 표현, 성소수자 콘텐츠의 공유및 계몽, 성소수자에 대한 편견 불식을 목표로 한다. 축제는 일년에 하루 공공공간을 점유하여 일시적으로 성소수자들이 안전하고 자유로울 수 있는 영토를 만들어낸다. 축제공간에서는 부스와 상징물을 통한 영토화가 일어나며, 참여자들의 언어와 신체표현을 통한 실천으로 채워진다. 퀴어문화축제에서는 다양한 부스행사, 무대발언 및 무대 공연, 슬로건과 상징물, 의례 등을 통해 성소수자 정치의 메시지들을 반복적이고 다양한 형태로 전달한다. 일상적으로 성소수자들을 억압하는 주류 사회의 이성애규범성과 정상가족 이데올로기, 그리고 유교적 엄숙주의, 동성애를 죄악시하는 기독교 근본주의 등의 메시지를 반박하고 조롱하며, 인정의 의례를 통해 성소수자들의 존재를 긍정한다. 계몽과 추모, 유희가 공존하는 축제 과정에서 참여자들은 평소의 고립과 상실감에서 벗어나 집합적이고 초월적인 퀴어 커뮤니티로서의 소속감을 확인한다.참여자들은 다양한 언어적 비언어적 기호들의 공감각적 결합을 통해, 밝고 즐거우며 당돌하고 다채로운 퀴어의 이미지를 만들어낸다. 퀴어문화축제의 공동체성, 전복성, 제의성은 축제의 주체가 되는 성소수자들의 일상의 경험과 무관하지 않다. 1년에 한 번 역할과 지위가 전도되는 퀴어문화축제의 유토피아적인 시공간안에는 비일상성과 유희성, 그리고 하나의 공동체 안에서 각자 다른 소리를 내는 다성성(polyvocality)과 창의성이 두드러진다. 이 밝고 다채롭고 개성이 넘치는 이미지들은 사회에서 성소수자에게 부여하는 의미와 위치, 즉 음습하고 비도덕적이며, 음지에 머물러 있어야 할 존재라는 기대에 정면으로 도전하게 된다. 계몽과 추모, 유희가 공존하는 축제 과정에서 참여자들은 평소의 고립과 상실감에서 벗어나 집합적이고 초월적인 퀴어 커뮤니티로서의 소속감을 확인한다.

The Queer Culture Festival (QCF) in Korea is a rapid growing social movement with an emphasis on the visibility and pride for the LGBTQ population. This study explores rituals and symbols in QCFs with a focus on the practices on festival ground. A variety of symbolic expressions, such as the territorialization of the festival ground, booth activities, staged speeches and slogans and artefacts, bodily expressions of festival participants challenge and mock the mainstream beliefs of heteronormativity, the ideology for LGBTQ populations of the ‘normal family’, the Confucianist standards and the anti-queer rhetoric of Evangelist Christians; In the ritual process of QCFs in which education, commemoration and playful festivity coexists, participants are exit from the isolation and trauma from their everyday life, and temporarily experience a sense of belonging to the collective identity of the queer community. Compared to other modern festivals in Korea, the ritualistic, communal, and subversive nature of the festival is more pronounced in QCFs, possibly because they draw their driving force from the collective traumas and oppressed emotions of queer participants.
