이 글은 근래 필자가 행하고 있는 ‘한국의 언어문화’ 연구의 한 방식인 ‘한국의 언어 민속지’ 연구 작업에 대한 개략적 소개이다. 구체적으로 ‘한국의 언어 민속지’ 연구의 기본 개요를 정리하고, 그 연구를 위한 연구 과정의 핵심인 언어 현지조사 과정과 또 그 과정에서 나타나는 몇 가지 방법론적 문제 등을 경험적 사실에 바탕하여 논의하려는 것이다. 이 글의 구성은 ‘Ⅰ. <한국의 언어 민속지> 연구의 동기와 목표’, ‘Ⅱ. <한국의 언어 민속지> 연구의 현황과 주요 내용’, ‘Ⅲ. 언어 현지조사의 과정과 주요 문제’, ‘Ⅳ. 몇 가지 방법론적 차원의 문제 제기’, ‘Ⅴ. 언어의 연구: 언어학 또는 언어과학?’ 으로 이루어진다.

This paper provides a general introduction to my research in ‘Linguistic Ethnography of Korea’ and guides the reader toward the study of ‘Korean linguaculture’. A summary is given of the main content of ‘Linguistic Ethnography of Korea’ along with a discussion of the process of field work conducted to study linguaculture, while also considering some of the methodological problems that I faced during the field work. Mainly, this paper consists of the following: 1) the purpose and motivation for conducting research to produce the ‘Linguistic Ethnography of Korea’; 2) the current situation of the ‘Lingusitic Ethnography of Korea’; 3) the process of linguistic field work and its major problems; 4) addressing the issues of methodology; and 5) studies of language: linguistcs or the science of linguistics ?
