This paper looked at around 20 materials about Kim Bang-gyeong, a minister of Goryeo degrading to the feudal lords of the Yuan dynasty in the second half of the 13th century. The materials reflecting well his many attitudes are his epitaph, the records of his life and his biography in History of Goryeo. The contents that arranged by Confucian scholars are quite similar. However, there is a little bit of difference according to the view of compilers. It made up for the brevity of each material. Therefore, each material is cross-checked. And the materials showing who really he is are poetry and prose, missive. The other is the data that made in the process of worship by the relatives. And it had been inquired into collaterally.
According to the materials, Kim Bang-gyeong was born into a minister’s family, and he was a scholar that prepared the civil service examination. But during the war with Mongol he turned into a general after his 20s. And his ability of writing and Confucianism was accumulated at the period of officer for history writing than the process of the civil service examination, when compared other representative scholars, he had a pretty high level. He was very religious and was connected with learned and virtuous priests at home and abroad. It is very similar to the situation of ruling class inspired by Confucianism.
In 1273, he was appointed to the prime minister and administered the affairs of state for a long time. However, he affected by Darugachi [達魯花赤] and the commander of Dongjeongwonsubu(東征元帥府). For this reason, he failed his attempts to reform the misgovernment. Moreover, he could not reject the one-sided instruction of Yuan Empire and could not enforce the independent policy. However, it cannot deny that he was “a learned minister of a good family protecting the dynasty in the crisis of the fall by the strong pressure of the foreign power.”
