The partial-sutra-reading-ritual was formed by the necessity of people’s belief system to make and press and preserve Buddhist Sutras. With royal-shrine-temple’s making, pressing and supplying sutras, the reading-ceremony was fashioned. Constructing sutra-seminary(藏經 道場) as national-Buddhist-ceremony, sutra-belief was developed as temple’s partial-sutra-reading-ritual. Euicheon(義天), Hejo(慧照) introducted sutra-chakra(輪大藏) in King Munjong. Thereafter the belief and charity of the partial-sutra-reading-ritual was enlarged more widely.
For Yuan’s intervention the ritual was as the official event for Yuan’s embassadors and as blessing Yuan royal family. The nobles used it for death-day memory and birth-benediction with their having the partial-reading mechanism in temples.
The ritual-contents had the virtuso-reverence and sutra-recitation. For the ritual, Buddhist majesty and instruments were necessary. For reciting monks participated. It was continued during 6 or 10days. They read partially in day. The monks taught sutra in night.
Min Ji(閔漬) and Yi Sek(李穡) said that the ritual was generalized through mediation between sutra-belief and True-I-Happiness(成佛 追 福). In late Goryeo and Early Choseon it was the major Buddhist event with Suryukjae(水陸齋). It wasted exorbitant finance. King Sejong prohibited the ritual. Additionally sutras was given to Japan politically. It was withered.
