Kim Chwi-ryeo(1172~1234), born in a military family, started his career as an officer given by Umso(蔭敍, protective appointment) at the age of 16. Then he rose to a high position mainly working in Gyeonryoung-gun(牽龍軍, a royal guard). When Khitans invaded Goryeo in 1216, he was promoted to both Sangjanggun(上將軍, supreme genaral), and Byungmasa(兵馬使, military commissioner), and rendered meritorious services in the war. From then on he filled important posts successively such as Kumo-wi(金吾衛) and Sinho-wi(神號衛) Sangjanggun(上將軍) and rose to a higher military position. Especially he led to win the Kangdong-sung(江東城) battle in alliance with Mongolia as a second chief. In the meantime he stood out to be an important person winning the confidence of Choe Chung-heon(崔忠獻). Under Choe U(崔瑀) regime, he continued to move up the ladder of his political power holding the posts of Chumil(樞密, security council) and Jesin(宰臣, state council). At that time he played a great part for taking a firm attitude against Mongols. After he hold the premiership, it seemed that he had a significant role to move capital to Kangwha Island(江華).
As we studied above, in his early age Kim Chwi-ryeo was in Gyeonryoung-gun(牽龍軍, a royal guard) as an elite officer;in his middle age, he took an active part in the war against Khitans and led to win as a competent commander;in his late years, he played an important role in building up the firm attitude against Mongols as a military expert and high administrator.
