근대기 선교건축은 선교사들의 한국 적응에 따른 한옥 개조와 한국인들의 변용을 위한 개량이 반영되어 독특한 형식의 건축물을 형성하였다. 이를 통해 서양 근대 건축의 이해를 쉽게 했고, 현대건축으로 이행하는 계기로 작용하였다. 특히 미국 남장로회의 선교건축은 선교지 분할 협정에 따라 전라남북도와 광주광역시에 집중되었다. 선교사들은 복음 선교를 목적으로 파견된 선교사라 할지라도 건축에 직간접적으로 참여했는데 그들의 선교활동이 활발해지면서 전문화된 활동이 요구되었고, 그들 중 적극적으로 활동한 인물이 윌슨과 스와인하트 선교사였다. 윌슨은 남장로회 의료선교사로 파견되었지만 건축 감독을 하면서 한국인 기술자를 양성했고, 토목회사 근무 경험을 바탕으로 적극적인 건축활동을 하였다. 스와인하트는 영선선교사로 남장로회의 선교지역뿐만 아니라 이화여대 공사 등 다양한 건축활동을 하였다. 이들의 선교 초기에는 중국인 건축기술자에 의존하였지만 시간이 지나면서 한국인을 기술분야별로 양성했다. 윌슨과 스와인하트의 건축활동에 대한 영향으로 종합계획에 따른 선교마을이 구축될 수 있었다. 선교건축은 일본식건축에 비해 상대적으로 적었지만 우리건축이 근대건축으로 발전하는 과정에서 한국건축의 한 축을 이룩했다.

Construction of modern mission sites reflects missionaries’ ability to adapt to remodel Hanok Acculturation of Korean improvement leading to construction of unique styled buildings. Through this effort Koreans were able to learn western modern architecture. This serves as an opportunity to transition towards modern architecture. According to the mission site partitioning agreement, the Southern Presbyterian Church in America mission construction coalition focused more in southern and northern Jeolla provinces as well as greater Gwangju City. Even though the missionaries were commissioned for spreading the gospel, they participated indirectly with construction efforts. As their involvement became more widespread, the need for professional contribution grew. But it was missionaries Wilson and Swineheart who were the most active. Wilson was commissioned as a medical missionary by the Southern Presbyterian Church in America but he was active in supervising construction efforts. During his service, he fostered Korean technicians and actively contributed using his background in civil engineering. Swineheart, a Youngsun missionary, not only served in his mission territories for the Southern Presbyterian Church in America but served for the construction of Ewha Womans University and other construction projects. At the onset of their missionary work, they relied on Chinese construction professionals but as time went on, they fostered Korean construction professionals. Wilson and Swineheart's roles in the construction of various mission villages were significant. Korean Mission construction numbered less than Japanese style construction, but it played a pivotal role in establishing Korean style construction as a development of modern construction.
