중국문화에는 유가(儒家)의 ‘경(敬)’을 근간으로 한 문화와 차별화되는 도가(道家)의 ‘광(狂)’을 근간으로 한 문화가 있다. 이 같은 도가의 ‘광’을 근간으로 하는 문화는 문인·예술가들의 ‘통음(痛飮)’문화와 매우 밀접한 관련이 있다. 본고는 만약 서양이었다면 ‘알콜 중독자’로 여겨질 만한 행위들을 중국문화와 예술사에서는 크게 문제를 삼지 않았던 ‘통음(痛飮)문화’에 대한 긍정적 인식과 그 긍정적 인식에 바탕한 문예 창착과 관련된 사유를 분석함으로써 중국문예사에서 통음(痛飮)문화가 갖는 철학적, 미학적, 예술론적 성격을 규명하고자 한다. 중국문예사를 볼 때 문인이나 예술가들의 광적인 기질과 행동거지를 긍정적으로 여기는 사유는 때론 ‘대취(大醉)’한 자태를 멋지게 여기는 풍조로도 나타나는데, 특히 서화예술 차원에서는 이런 점이 더욱 뚜렷하게 나타난다. 술에 대한 광태(狂態)어린 행위와 그 광태어린 행위에 대한 긍정적 사유는 주로 위진(魏晉)시대에 명사들의 행태에 나타난다. 이처럼 술을 찬미하는 삶에는 일정 정도 세속적 삶에서의 근심걱정에서 벗어나게 하는 것을 비롯하여 탈예법(脫禮法)적 삶, 은일(隱逸)적 삶, 탈속(脫俗)적 삶, 더 나아가 부조리한 현실에 대한 비판 등이 연계되어 있다. 이에 술은 중국문인들은 단순 ‘먹는다는 차원의 음료’로서만 여기지 않았다. 술은 이성에 억눌린 감성을 자유자재로 표현할 수 있게 하였고, 아울러 천인합일의 경지를 가능하게 하는 이른바 철학적이면서 문화적인 음료였다.

Chinese culture has a culture based on a Confucian scholar's 'piety', and a culture based on a Taoist 'insanity' that is differentiated from it. A Taoist's culture of 'insanity' is very closely related to the culture of 'heavy drinking' of literary and artists. Thinking positively of the literary and artist's thoughts and actions is sometimes seen as a trend that considers the “dead drunkenness” status to be wonderful, and this is even more apparent at the level of calligraphy and art. The life of "praising alcohol" is associated with a certain degree of relief from anxiety in secular life, a life free from etiquette, a private life, a secular life, and even a critique of reality. Therefore, alcohol was not regarded as a simple 'drink of eating' to Chinese literati and artist. Emotions suppressed by reason can be dismantled by drinking alcohol, and then expressed as a freely philosophical and cultural drink that enables the state of the union of heaven and human.
