구상이 1956년 발간한 두 번째 시집 『초토의 시』는 15편의 연작시를 통해 민족상잔의 전쟁체험과 전후 현실에 대해 증언하고 수록하고 있는 그의 대표작이다. 이 시집에 수록된 시편들은 각각이 독립된 내용과 형식을 갖추고 있으면서 초토가 된 세계에서 인간 내면의 강인한 생명력과 희망을 찾아내고 이를 기독교적인 윤리의식과 휴머니즘으로 형상화하고 있다. 이러한 점에서 『초토의 시』는 구상 초기시 뿐만 아니라 시세계 전체의 중심에 있다고 할 수 있다. 본고에서는 구상의 『초토의 시』를 두 가지 관점에서 살펴보았다. 하나는 『초토의 시』가 시인의 대표작이면서 문학사에서도 중요작품으로 주목받고 있음에도 불구하고 여러 번의 개작과정을 보이고 있음에 주목하고 그 개작양상을 정리하고 개작의 의의를 정리하였다. 다른 하나는 『초토의 시』에 수록된 시편들을 크게 셋으로 분류하여 각각이 갖는 의의가 무엇인지를 살피고 나아가 이 시편들이 서로 어떤 의미망을 이루고 있는지를 고찰하였다. 다만 『초토의 시』 원작의 의도와 쓰여진 시대적 상황에 최대한 밀착하여 살핀다는 차원에서 1956년 청구출판사에서 발간한 시집 『초토의 시』를 대상으로 원본 비평적 접근 방식을 취했다.

Ku Sang’s second collection of poems, Wasteland Poems published in 1956, is his signature work that testifies and contains about the war experiences of a national disaster and postwar realities through 15 series of poems. The verses in this book have their own independent content and format, discovering the strength and hope of human inner strength in a devastated world and configurate them as a Christian ethic and humanism. In this point Wasteland Poems is at the center of, not only the early poetry stages of Ku Sang but also the whole poetic world. In this article, we looked at Ku Sang’s Wasteland Poems from two perspectives. One is that 「Wasteland Poems」 is a representative work of the poet, and even though it’s getting attention as a major piece of work in the history of literature, it has been adapted several times so I have sorted out the details and the significance of the rewriting. The other is to divide the verses of 「Wasteland Poems」 into three large groups to examine what each of them means and further to look at how they form a semantic network. However, in order to keep close tabs on the intentions of the original work and the situation of the written era, an original critical approaching way was taken to Wasteland Poems, the collection published by Cheonggu Publishing Co. in 1956.
