본고는 東大寺 所藏 『大方廣佛花嚴經』 卷第12~20에 記入된 角筆字 [白]의 기입 양상과 [白]으로 기입된 고대 국어 동사 어간 ‘*□-’의 용법을 살펴보고자 한것이다. 東大寺本 花嚴經에 記入된 角筆字 [白]은 고대국어의 동사 어간 ‘□-’을 기입한 것이다. [白]과 함께 좌우에 수직선이 기입되기도 하였는데 이는 訓讀符號이다. 角筆字 [白]으로 記入된 고대국어 “말하다”류의 동사 ‘*□-’은 기존의 연구에서 알려진 대로 목적어 명사구가 가리키는 대상이 尊待의 인물인 경우에도 실현되어 겸양을 표현하였지만, 주어 명사구가 가리키는 대상이 尊待 인물인 경우에도 실현되어 주체 높임을 표현하였음을 확인할 수 있었다. 후자는 釋讀 口訣에서 주체 높임과 관련된 선어말어미 ‘-白-’과 연결되는 것으로, 어간의 용법이 관형사형 어미라는 특정 환경에서 화석으로 남은 것은 아닌가 하는 추측을 해볼 수 있게 한다.

This paper examines the appearance of gakpil(invisible annotation engraved by a stylus) mark [白] used in The Buddha’s Flower Garland Sutra of Great Expensive Teachings (大方廣佛花嚴經) from the volumes twelve to twenty owned by Todaiji. This paper also discusses the use of *sol p, a verb stem of Ancient Korean, which was marked by a letter [白] in the text of The Buddha’s Flower Garland Sutra of Great Expensive Teachings. A vertical line is sometimes found on each side of the note [白] and these lines signify hundok (訓讀), a reading of a Sinographic character based upon its meaning. As already known earlier, the verb stem *solp ‘speak’ of Ancient Korean marked by [白], indicates selfdeprecation when a referent in an objective clause is someone respectable. In addition, this paper discusses that the use of *solp also appears when a referent in a subjective clause is someone respectable. The latter use of *solp-seems to be related to 白, an honorific infix for a subjective referent used by seokdokgugyeol (釋讀口訣), a vernacular writing in Sinographic characters. This paper surmises that *solp-as a honorific verb for a subjective clause might have resulted from the fossilization of the honorific infix 白-in hundok and gugyeol, particularly in a specific situation when 白 appears as a verb stem modifying a noun.
