Observing the choices of canteen foods and its relationship with the nutrition status among school students in a rural district in Sri Lanka

Objective: To determine the choices of school canteen foods and its relationship with the nutrition status of school choices among school children in a rural setting, Sri Lanka Methods: This cross sectional study was carried out among 603 students who were selected through the multi-stage stratified cluster sampling technique. A self-administered questionnaire was implemented to collect information related to the behavior on dietary practices among school students. Height and weight was measured using standard protocol and BMI was calculated. SPSS 20.0 version was used to analyze data. Results: There were 51.6% females in the sample. Mean BMI was 18.15 Kgm-2 (. It was observed that 65.7% of them underweight while 8.0% were overweight. Results showed that nearly 30% of them received 40 to 80 rupees per day as pocket money and more than half (58.0%) of students spent their pocket money on foods. Results suggested that 72% students bought foods from the school canteen and 36.2% consumed junk food. Results indicated that percentages of consumption of short-eats were 36.2% respectively and consumption of dairy products and fruits were 2.8% and 0.3% respectively. In terms of the availability of dairy products, only four canteens (15.4%) sold yoghurt and five canteens (19.2%) sold curd and none of canteens sold other dairy products. It was observed that none of canteens sold fruits and pulses. All the canteens sold starch foods such as string hoppers, hoppers and other starch foods. In terms of the bakery products, availability of sausage bun, bread, fish bun and other bakery products were 19.2%, 38.4%, 73.2% and 96.2% respectively. Conclusion: In conclusion, results of the present study indicated that majority of students were underweight. Results showed that most of students spent their pocket money on foods form the school canteen. Majority of students consumed unhealthy foods.
