지역 간 격차가 허물어지면서 방언들 사이에 평준화 현상이 나타나고 있다. 특히 이는 젊은 세대를 중심으로 진행되고 있으며, 방언 평준화는 ‘신방언(new dialect)’의 성장 가능성을 높이는 주요한 요인이 된다. 이전 세대에서 사용하던 말과 차이가 있는 어형으로 상대적으로 젊은 화자들이 일상어로 사용하는 새로운 방언형을 ‘신방언’이라고 한다. ‘오→우’ 고모음화는 그 개신지가 중부 지역으로 남부 지역인 대구 지역어에 서는 생산성이 낮은 음운 현상이었다. 하지만 최근 대구 지역의 젊은 세대를 중심으로 ‘오→우’ 고모음화가 생산적으로 실현되는 양상을 보인다. 본고에서는 대구 지역의 노년층 화자들과 달리 쓰임이 확산되고 있는 ‘오→우’ 고모음화를 ‘신방언’으로 파악하고 그 실현 양상이 어떠한지 세대별로 나누어 살펴보았다. 그 결과 신방언으로서의 ‘오→우’ 고모음화는 어휘 형태소에서 거의 실현되지 않았지만 문법 형태소에서 높은 생산성을 보였다. 대구 지역의 전형적인 노년층 에서는 ‘오→우’ 고모음화가 일부 어휘 형태소에서만 미약하게 실현된 것과 차이를 보인다. 또한 ‘오→우’ 고모음화의 원래 개신지였던 중부 지역에서는 어휘 형태소와 문법 형태소 모두에서 생산적으로 실현되는 것과도 비교해볼 수 있다. 대구 지역에서 ‘오→우’ 고모음화가 신방언으로 세력을 확산하여 성장하고 있는 것은 젊은 세대들이 느끼는 중앙어에 대한 ‘숨겨진 위신(covert prestige)’과 더불어 ‘오→우’ 고모음화 자체에 대한 ‘[공손, 친근, 친절함]’이라는 긍정적인 인식이 작용했기 때문이다.

‘New dialect’ is a new type of dialect, which differs from the words used among the previous generation and is used among relatively young speakers. ‘o→u’ vowel rising originated from the central area and was a phonological phenomenon with low productivity in the dialect of Daegu, where is a southern area. However, ‘o→u’ vowel rising is being realized productively among the young generation in Daegu, recently. With the collapse of regional disparity, a leveling phenomenon is appearing among dialects and especially, this centers around the young generation. Dialect leveling increases growth potential of new dialect. Therefore, this study examined the generational aspects of realization of ‘o→u’ vowel rising as a ‘new dialect’ appearing in Daegu. As a result, it was found that ‘o→u’ vowel rising as a ‘new dialect’ was hardly realized in lexical morpheme, but had high productivity in grammatical morpheme. On the contrary, ‘o→u’ vowel rising was slightly realized only in some lexical morpheme among typical older people. Also, it was productively realized in both lexical morpheme and grammatical morpheme of regional dialect of the central area, where ‘o→u’ vowel rising originated from. The reason why the power of new dialect is spreading and growing in Daegu is because of the hidden dignity of the central dialect and the positive perceptions of ‘o→u’ vowel rising, such as ‘politeness, intimacy, and kindness’.
