민족 생활어 조사 사업은 국립국어원이 주관하고 추진한 2007년부터 2013년 까지 7년에 걸쳐서 우리 민족의 기층 생활어를 조사한 사업이다. 민족 생활어 조사 사업의 목적은 소멸 위기에 놓인 우리 민족의 기층 생활어를 지속적이고 체계적으로 조사 정리하여 문서화하는 일이다. 민족 생활어 조사 사업은 크게 그 시기와 대상에 따라서 1단계와 2단계의 두 단계로 나누어진다. 1단계인 2007∼2009년까지 3년은 민족 생활어 중 소멸 위기에 놓인 민족 고유의 기층문화 언어를 조사하였다. 1단계 조사는 전국 10개 광역 지역을 대상으로 전통문화와 관련된 특수 직업 사회에서 사용하는 언어와 전통음식인 ‘떡’과 ‘김치’ 관련 생활어를 조사하였다. 1단계의 개별 조사와 공통조사의 결과의 공통적인 내용은 다음과 같다. 1) 문헌 조사와 현지 조사를 병행 함으로써, 문헌 자료가 가진 현장성의 한계점을 극복할 수 있었다. 문헌 자료는 대부분 표준어로 기술되어 있는데, 그에 대응하는 현장의 생활어를 확인할 수 있는 계기가 되었다. 2) 특히 공통 조사 주제인 ‘떡, 김치’는 재료, 만드는 방법 등에 따라서 지역마다 분류 체계의 다양성이 나타났다. 조사된 자료들로써 ‘떡, 김치’의 어휘망을 구축하기 위한 토대를 마련하였다. (‘김치’의 연구 성과는 본지 게재 홍기옥의 논문 참조) 3) 조사된 어휘의 상당수가 ≪표준국어대사전≫에 등재되지 않은 어휘 항목들임이 확인되었을 뿐만 아니라, ≪표준국어대사전≫ 의 뜻풀이의 오류와 내용을 수정, 보완할 수 있는 자료로 활용하게 되었다. 2단계인 2010∼2013년까지 4년은 소멸 위기의 어촌 생활의 기초어휘와 생활 어를 조사하는 일이다. 2차 단계의 조사는 전국 해안 지역 -동, 서, 남, 제주의 4개 지역을 대상으로 어촌 사람들이 사용하고 있는 바다 관련 기초어휘, 생활어 자료를 구축하는 일을 목적으로 한다. 본 조사의 가장 큰 수확은 조사를 체계적으로 수행하기 위한 <어촌 생활 기초어휘 조사 질문지>를 개발한 일이다. 본 사업에서 새로 개발된 <어촌 생활 기초어휘 조사 질문지>는 조사하기 전, 중간과 정을 통해서 수정, 보완하는 귀납적인 방식으로 완성하였다. <어촌 생활 기초어휘 조사 질문지> 구성은 행위자, 환경, 공간, 어획물, 어획 도구, 어획 방법, 어로 행위, 음식, 민속 등 8개의 최상위 범주로 분류하였다. 조사 항목은 8개 범주를 다시 중, 소 범주로 하위분류하여 327개 기초어휘를 선정하고, 이 어휘들과 관련된 확장 어휘 항목 158개를 추가하여 모두 485개 항목으로 하였다. 질문유형과 방식은 어휘뿐만 아니라 어법, 문형, 관용표현 등도 조사할 수 있도록 다양화하였다. 그 외 조사 현장에서 효율적인 조사를 위하여 156장의 사진 자료를 부록으로 첨부하였다. 국내 최초로 개발된 이 <어촌 생활 기초어휘 질문지>는 다양한 어촌 생활의 기초어휘 목록과 함께 관련 예문도 함께 제시함으로써 어촌 생활어의 어휘장과 바다 관련 어휘 체계를 살필 수 있는 자료로 활용될 수 있다는 점에 그 의의를 둘 수 있다.

Researching Everyday Language of Korean is a project funded by The National Institute of the Korean Language(NIKL) for 7 years, 2007-2013, which has widely and concentrative researched everyday language of Korean for the first time and a long period. The purpose of the project is to investigate and arrange everyday basic language of Korean which is endangered of extinction and finally to document them. The project is divided into two phases according to investigation periods and themes. The first phase of 3 years(2007-2009) is the term for investigating Korean own traditional and cultural everyday language in 10 regions of Korea. The theme of the first phase is about ‘dduck(Korean rice cake)’ and ‘gimchi.’ the language that professional specific workers use, which is connected with Korean traditional culture and everyday language related with Korean traditional food. The investigation results of the first phase enables the classification system of ‘dduck’ and ‘gimchi’ used in each region and the corpus related with ‘dduck’ and ‘gimchi’ to be made. They can also make it possible to check whether the claasification system and the corpus is recorded or not in The Standard Korean Dictionary and to modify or supplement the definition statement of their meanings connected with ‘dduck’ and ‘gimchi’ in The Standard Korean Dictionary. The second phase of 4 years(2010-2013) is the term of investigating basic words and everyday language of fishing villagers in endangered of extinction. The purpose of this phase is to collect materials of basic words and traditional everyday language related with the sea in fishing villages. The greatest output of this project is the completion of < The Questionaire about Investigating Basic Vocabularies of Fishing Villagers >. It is composed of 8 high level categories including behavior, environment, place, fish catch, catching equipment, catching method, fishing act, food, and folklore. The numbers of questions are total 485, among which 327 are chosen from 3 large, medium and small classifications divided from 8 categories and 158 expanded vocabularies connected with them are added. The question type and method is made to be various to investigate not only words but grammar, sentence structures, and idioms. 156 picture materials can be helpful to investigate places. < The Questionaire about Investigating Basic Vocabularies of Fishing Villagers > because of its providing the contents and examples of basic words of fishing villagers, can make the field of words abundant and be valuable materials to look over and research the words system.
