이 글의 목적은 心岳 李崇寧 선생이 소장하고 있던 平北方言 자료를 학계에 소개하는 데에 있다. 본고의 평북방언 자료는 평북 출신인 平壤師範學校 학생들이 자기 말을 조사하여 보고한 12편의 보고서이다. 그리고 이들 자료는 ‘音韻, 語法, 語彙’로 나누어 1930년대 평북방언의 특징들을 잘 보여주고 있다. 특히 음운론적 특징들이 잘 드러나는바, ‘ㅚ>ㅙ’의 변화, ‘ㅢ’의 음가, ‘치경음-j’ 연쇄의 변화 등이 그것이다. 한편 이들은 자료가 절대적으로 부족한 1930년대 평북방언 자료라는 점, 단순히 자료의 제시에 그치는 것이 아니라 그에 대한 기술·설명을 곁들이고 있다는 점, 화자들의 방언의식을 드러내고 있다는 점에서 그 가치가 작지 않다고 할 수 있다.

The purpose of this paper is to introduce the material of the Pyeongbuk dialect owned by Prof. Lee Soong Nyoung. This material consists of 12 reports that students of Pyeongyang College of Education, who came from Pyeonganbukdo, investigated their native dialects. This material, which is classified into vocal sound, grammar, and vocabulary, shows characteristics of Pyeongbuk dialect, more particulary phonological ones; a change of ‘ㅚ’ into ‘ㅙ’, the phonetic value of ‘ㅢ’, a change of the ‘alveolar-j’, and so forth. This material possesses great value in several respects; (1) This is the material of the Pyeongbuk dialect in 1930's which is insufficient absolutely, (2) This does not simply display, but also describe and explain the material, (3) The shows dialectal perception of the native speakers.
